Encryption Plugin + Linux VNC Client

Post by fez »

Hello

I have a windows server, running xp pro x64 edition, and I use Ultravnc with it. Everything runs great normally.

I often vnc into this machine from my very low end linux laptop (64mb ram).

I recently decided to encrypt this connection for security.

There does not seem to be any way to use the AES encryption plugin (or any of the other DSM's) with a linux client. Is there an Ultravnc viewer for Linux? Do any other linux VNC clients support AES/DSM? (I am using TightVNC for my client).

I tried installing an SSH server on the windows machine, and vnc through an SSH tunnel, however that turned out to be EXTREMELY slow, and the AES plugin seems like the nicest solution. Under Windows VNC viewer, it runs very fast and smoothly.

(highest priority)
How can I use the AES encryption plugin with a linux based viewer?

(second priority)
Also, my system is barely fast enough to run Java. The Java viewer option would probably be just as bad as the SSH tunneling option. If, however, there is java option that won't be too hard on my system, that may work.

(third priority)
Also, I realize this isn't an SSH forum, but perhaps I can achieve greater speeds by somehow modifying my OpenSSHd config? (It's the default cygwin/sshd).

Thanks

Ok well I see there is no answer. I just think the DSM encryption idea __WOULD__ be good _IF_ it was not platform dependent. I avoid installing windows on my home machines and only use linux where possible. Making a linux viewer or AES plugin for a linux client would be very nice.

I have a similar problem. Past forum messages indicate that there were problems running DSM plug-ins in linux under wine, but hint that the latest versions fix the earlier problems.

Does DSM encryption work in linux now?

I am using the 2006/08/16 version of MSRC4plugin_Noreg.dsm, and version 1.02 of UltraVNC under Wine in Mandriva 2008.1. If I do not use encryption, it works fine. I use the same DSM plug-in on all my WIndows boxes, and they all work fine. But if I try to reach any of the Windows boxes from the viewer in Linux/wine using the DSM plug-in, it fails, suggesting the DSM encryption keys don't match. I have tried both generating a key and copying the key from a Windows box, but neither satisfies UltraVNC viewer under wine.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

hey since you know about openssh, you could try openvpn its more easier to use and it will keep alll the network traffic secure between 2 computers

it will create a virtual network card between the ultravnc server and ultravnc client and this tunnel can go through http proxies without and problem also the traffic can be routed and send throught this tunnel just like you would send normal traffic like dns, http or smb and linux has nativ binaries so does windows, get the openvpn setup both on client and server and you would find all the encryption and speed problems gorn

there is an windows gui + openvpn build you can download for using on windows from http://openvpn.se

and all other openvpn binaris can be downloaded from http://openvpn.net :-D
