AES Doen't Work Reliably

Post by jimwayda »

I recently installed untravnc and found that the installation went quite well and that all functionality including the repeater is working as advertised. I then decided that I wanted to add AES encryption and proceeded to install the AES plugin. I copied the dsm file and the libeay32 file to the vnc directory and created the new_aes key. I then renames the aes key and when I did the "config" the key was successfully found. I did the same installation on both the client and the server systems and copied the aes key file to both systems so that they are using the same aes key.

Description of the problem:

I then attempted to connect to the server from the client. I checked the box to use the AES plugin and proceeded to connect to the server. This did not work. The screen came and where you would normally see the message that the initial screen is loading, it was hung at this point. I noticed that on the server system the ultravnc server had exited and the service helper had also exited. The server was really in a bad state. I then restarted ultravnc on the server and restarted the service helper. I then went back to the client system and tried connecting to the server again. This time it worked fine and continued to work without any problems!!

If I then reboot the server system, the same problem will occur again. I will need to go to the server system and manually restart the untravnc server and then eveything is fine again.

I also tried another experiment where on the server system I deselected the AES plugin so that the untravnc server is not using any plugins. I then did the same thing on the client system. I then rebooted the server system and tried to connect to the server from the client system. (Note that I an not selecting any plugin on the client system). This caused the exact same problem and the ultravnc server on the server sysetm exited.

In order to resolve this problem I had to remove the dms file and the libeay32 file from the server system. Now I can reboot the server without any problems, however, I have also removed AES.

What is the problem here? How can I get AES to reliably work on my systems? Is there a known bug that is causing this problem?

Thanks,

-jim

Thanks for the response. I am using the correct plugin. What else could be the problem?

libeay32 is not necessary until few release of dsmplugin because integrated inside aesv2plugin.dsm ....
maybe the double presence from dsmplugin + your own libeasy32 could conflict

I just gave this suggestion a try and it did not make any difference. Any other ideas?

Is it possible for one of the moderators to move this thread to the "plugins" discussion so that some of the developers can read it? I should have placed it there to start with.

Thanks,

Could some of the developers please post some ideas of what I should try next to troubleshoot this problem? BTW, I have had success with AES on other computers. There is something about this one laptop that I am using as a server that is causing the problem.

Are you sure that you are not fighting with a spyware/virus issue on your laptop that is not working?? If you have had success with other computers it is just a thought.. I have personally used the AES plugin on Windows XP Pro machines with no issues what so ever..
