Limiting access

Post by coffeeguy »

I'm trying to figure out how to give limited access to someone. Our network has an Ubuntu-Linux server, XP Pro running on all workstations and we use Samba for file management. We have UltraVNC running on one of the workstations so we can get support for a technical app we run. Our router port forwards the technician to the appropriate workstation where he is prompted for user name and password.

Once connected, I would like the technician to only have access to a bare bones screen with a web browser and a few apps, not the same access as that workstation's user. In other words, no access to network drives. They don't want the responsibility of greater access and of course we don't want it either. I have tried giving the person guest access on the computer but they are unable to login. I can't seem to get them in at all when I have the 'new MS Login' checked. So far, the only way I am able to provide them remote control access is to make them an adminstrator on the workstation, but of course, they wind up with total access. What am I doing wrong?

Caution: I'm still new to UltraVNC myself!

To confirm: Have you configured the MS Logon groups that have access?

Only local admins have access by default so unless you have specfied the limited user account, or a group that account is a member of, it will not work.
