alternate and safer method for disabling forceguest

Post by sgt-d »

as we all know, ms login ii will not work unless the forceguest setting is turned off in windows xp. many topics in this forum mention editing the registry and changing the forceguest setting from 1 (default) to 0. while this method is 100% effective, it forces end users to modify settings in the system registry – which isn’t normally a great idea.

i have found another approach that is also 100% effective, but it is much simpler for end users and it avoids the need for the registry editor completely – a zero risk solution for everyone.

the setting i am referring to is located in windows xp folder options.

start -> control panel -> folder options

-or-

c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Options_RunDLL 0

you can also make a windows shortcut using the above command line.

in folder options, click on the view tab.

in the lower window area, drag the scroll bar down to the very bottom.

the bottom option in the window area is:

use simple file sharing (recommended)

when “use simple file sharing” is checked (meaning windows will use simple file sharing), it changes the forceguest setting to 1 (on) which will cause all incoming ms login ii login attempts to fail – no matter what.

when “use simple file sharing” is unchecked (meaning windows will use advanced file sharing), it changes the forceguest setting to 0 (off) which will allow all incoming ms login ii login attempts to succeed – provided that all other settings for ms login ii (and users/groups) are correct.

so, for ms login ii to work correctly, simply uncheck the “use simple file sharing” option.

notes...

if you insist that you want simple file sharing, then you cannot use ms login ii.

if you have created some "simple" shares, you might want to turn off sharing for those folders before switching to "advanced" sharing. if you are in "advanced" mode, windows xp will not allow you to modify "simple" share properties and vice versa.

"advanced" sharing mode isn't too difficult to work with. if you need to share some folders on the network, just add user accounts and passwords to your windows xp user accounts in control panel. if you add a user/pass that matches another computer's user/pass login, they will be able to browse your shares. plus you have more control over what access rights they have.

misc...

incidentally... i found this by complete accident last night. when i got home i was unable to login to my ultravnc server at work and for the life of me i couldn’t figure out why. i checked all of my settings for the winvnc service, i created new users and groups, i checked all of my network settings, i tried a complete uninstall/reinstall of ultravnc 1.0.0 rc 20.3 – hell, i even tried a system restore point from the previous day. nothing worked. it was working perfectly for a week, but now i was about to give up completely because i couldn’t figure out anything that might have caused this problem. then i remembered that i had shown someone at work the difference between simple and advanced file sharing in windows xp – and accidentally left my computer in “simple file sharing” mode. this action turned the forceguest setting back to 1 which caused all ms login ii connection attempts to fail.

i hope this little accident ends up helping someone out there!

this may have been posted somewhere on the forums, but i didn't see it anywhere. appologies to all if this is repeated information.

use simple file sharing (recommended)
this checkbox option not visible on XP Home
and stay always active from factory

(not found a workaround how to disable it)

as seen above, forceguest on registry over XP home had no effect.
as well, MS Logon II not work on XP home (server)

thank you for your hint ;-)
