no window when logged into WinXP sp2

Post by daves0 »

Hi! I'm running the viewer from a WinXP SP2 machine into another WinXP SP2 machine's server. The scenario is as follows:

I am at the server, logged on. I "lock" the machine so that the screen displays "This machine is locked and can only be unlocked by (my id) or an administrator". The (my id) part is my local id on that machine.

I am an administrator on both machines.

I then go home and fire up my home machine, and try to VNC into the server machine. I get the logon prompt, enter my id and password, and the connection dialog window DOES say "Password accepted" for a brief instant before that window closes.

However, the view window that would show my server's screen never opens!

Now, if I call in to work and ask someone to "unlock" the server machine (and yes, I have to tell them my password to do that .. ugh ..), and then I try to log into the server from home, it works! As soon as the connection dialog window closes, the window showing my server's screen opens up and I can VNC to my heart's content.

Any ideas what's going on here? I have that server set up exactly like another machine I dial into, from what I can tell, and yet it acts funny .. I would appreciate any ideas anyone can give me!

A bit more info: on checking the Application log on the server I'm connecting to, the following log entry is there:

Connection received from 63.xxx.xxx.xxx using xxxx account

The X's are valid ip's and my logon id.

So, it is connecting and validating just fine .. but, it doesn't bring up the vnc viewer window. I'm lost .. can anyone help???

problem solved!!

Well, after another hour of digging around in the forums, I've found my problem. It seems that I ran the VNC server as an application all those many moons ago when I first set it up, and the server has not been rebooted since, so the actual SERVICE had not run yet. Therefore, the security settings were for an app, not a service, and the problem spoken of elsewhere in the forums, where the screen saver password blocked access to the computer, was occurring. I had the server rebooted, and all is fine!

Isn't Windows fun? ...

Sorry for the disturbance .. we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.
