Single Click to help 3G wireless user

Postby Frank » 2011-12-09 01:30

I am attempting to use SC to control a remote XP computer which is connected to the Internet through a 3G wireless connection. The service provider is Earthcomm, which uses the Sprint 3G network. The 3G USB modem stick that plugs directly into the computer is a Sierra Wireless 598U.

The modem does translate the IP address, but there appears to be no way to access setup within the modem to do any port forwarding. And, perhaps, Sprint or Earthcomm might block typical VNC ports anyway. It would seem that uVNC Single Click could be the answer to this problem.

Is there a particular port that might work with SC in this case?

Thanks for your help.

Yes -- if your "viewer" PC can sit listening on an open port behind ITS router, then the remote 3G "server" PC can connect outbound to it. As long as your remote 3G machine can make outbound connections (without a web proxy required) it should work. Be aware that latency (lag) may be poor.

You can start by trying to have your viewer PC in "listening mode" on port 80 -- if the 3G machine can't reach that, you might be out of luck.

Thank you for advice.

I just tried it. And it worked! I used port 5500. I had tried 80 yesterday and it didn't work. However, this is a case where the person on the distant end doesn't have a lot of experience with file handling. Hence, the need to offer assistance. However, today he was able to handle and rename the emailed exe file such that it worked!

Like you say, it was a little sluggish, however, I had been dealing with him via a dial up connection, which has been painful for two years or so. So this was perfect.

Thanks for your hard work on this project. It saves a lot of people a lot of time and grief.

Great to hear. FYI, the thanks go to Rudi, who's the only current developer as far as I know. (I just contribute to the forum.)

Your feedback and assistance count for a lot.

I was thinking about switching to the "update 2011" version creator. I generally don't like to fix something that isn't broken, but, it seems the newer version can be used with windows 7 and xp. Is there a reason not to use it in place of the RC23 version?

Thanks again!

Thank you!

None that I know of, but I really don't use UltraVNC SC. (I changed to SCPrompt and ChunkVNC, among others, a couple of years ago and haven't really taken SC for a spin in a while; I never had much luck with it myself.) But if I were using it now I'd definitely go with the latest version.

Thank you. I'll look into SCPrompt and ChunkVNC to see what advantages they offer.

Great tool!
