UltraVNC / SC getting too slow for Win XP, 7, 8, etc.

Post by smu johnson »

Howdy,

We have been happy users of UltraVNC's SingleClick for about a decade. It seems to be the only VNC choice (commercial or free) that offers such a thing.

But, unfortunately with newer versions of Windows 7 and up, we're noticing it's simply just too slow. Even when connecting to some XP machines, it becomes painfully unresponsive. Sure, these people may live far away, or may not have the best internet connection... but I'm starting to wonder if that's even the bottleneck these days. While it likely sounds like I'm complaining, I'm just, a bit concerned. Mostly because the people here who use it several times a day have to trudge through it, and sometimes when I have to do tech support for someone else, I have to "do it" at what seems like 10 as slow as I'd like it.

I am not sure if there is potential for the protocol to be more efficient, or anything, but I'd be quite optimistic if it could be sped up somehow. Maybe there is room for improvement?

For what it's worth, even doing a recent SingleClick test over on a LAN with a Windows 8 machine was going slower than I thought it would it should. Will do some more tests later when I get some free time.

I have some tangent questions too:

1) To what extent does the version of UltraVNC (not the SC .exe) depend on the speed? Would newer, improved versions go faster down the road, despite using a SC .exe from 2013?

2) How does one "use" the w8hook.dll suggestion I see being mentioned? Is it even relevant to SC being slow at times?

Thanks for reading.

Indeed, some fix found in the full version was never corrected in the SC version.
On some systems this make it extreem slow and even can crash some appliactions.
We will make some test SC winvnc in a few days to check if it's faster.
