SC/WinVNC & Repeater.

Post by jassing »

I have several computers at my home office.
I set up the NAT router as such:

5500 -> 5501 on server1
5900 -> 5901 on server1

repeater is listening for 5501 and 5901 I have both modes checked.

I try to use SC as such:
[HOST]
Support contact
-ID server1 -connect myhomeofficeIP:5500 -noregistry

when I double click on the sc connection, I can see the connection from the sc machine come into the router, then to the repeater, but the connection doesn't seem to make it to the viewer, that is sitting in the tray.. (vncviewer -listen)

-----------

Using vncviewer I can see into server1 just fine -- so the repeater is working that way.

-----------

Is there something I've not set up correctly? Or have I misunderstood something?

Thanks
-josh

Thanks redge.

I misunderstood -- since using vncviewer INTO the repeater network uses machine names -- I thought the viewer would too.

I'll give that a whirl.

I guess i'm brain dead for the day -- I don't get it..
I can't figure out how to get single click to connect to a -listen vncviewer session -- and if I add hte -id -- it just sits there with negotiating...

Thanks -- I'll plug at it later...

need clarification...

FIRST of all, does the repeater II replace the use/functionality of NVC/NSC for NAT2NAT?

SECOND, can someone please help clarify how the repeater works with SC in this situation:

SCENARIO:
Let's say i'm on the road... i'm at starbucks. I'm using their wireless internet access. A prospect calls in and would like remote support, and he's behind a NAT router (and does not have ANY flavor of VNC installed on his computer). sooo, i tell him to download my client so i can connect to him.

Further, assume that i have the repeater running and accessible at the home office at the ip address of 177.22.34.144 (arbitrary ip for this example) using port 7777

QUESTION:
1. how should the repeater be setup at my home office location?

2. what are the settings that i SHOULD have for the vncviewer on my laptop at starbucks? -- currently, i use (but this is w/o any use of repeater):

"C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -listen 7777 -8bit -dsmplugin msrc4plugin_noreg.dsm -autoscaling -256colors

3. what commandline/setting should i have for the client side that the prospect is running on his side behind his NAT router? currently, i use (again, without use of a repeater):

-plugin -connect 177.22.34.144:7777 -noregistry

4. Looking at my above configuration, what changes do i need to make to allow me to get past starbucks' firewall and his NAT router to remotely support him?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY FEEDBACK AND HELP ON THIS!

- does the repeater II replace the use/functionality of NVC/NSC for NAT2NAT?

repeater 1.1.0.4 --> no
next major build of repeater II and SC III --> yes
[topic=3239][/topic] and [topic=3395][/topic]

- can someone please help clarify how the repeater works with SC in this situation:

use repeater 1.1.0.4 as mode II for this job
http://sc.uvnc.com/REL1.00/updates/

- how should the repeater be setup at my home office location?

please look http://doc.uvnc.net/addons/repeater.html#mode2
on your home office NAT/router open 2 ports:
port 5500 TCP (SC incoming listen) (your customer incoming call to your repeater)
AND
port 5901 TCP (accept, your viewer incoming call to your repeater)

- what are the settings that i SHOULD have for the vncviewer on my laptop at starbucks? -- currently, i use (but this is w/o any use of repeater):

"C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -proxy 177.22.34.144::5901 ID:7777 -dsmplugin msrc4plugin_noreg.dsm -autoscaling -8bit -256colors

- what commandline/setting should i have for the client side that the prospect is running on his side behind his NAT router? currently, i use (again, without use of a repeater):

-plugin -id 7777 -connect 177.22.34.144::5500 -noregistry

- Looking at my above configuration, what changes do i need to make to allow me to get past starbucks' firewall and his NAT router to remotely support him?

You and customer don't need to do anything more on their respective desktop computer (client) or you (notebook computer)
yourself: start vncviewer to connect to your repeater, see above
customer: start there preconfigured SC made from you, see above

thx for the response!... dsm problem...

Post by tekkid »

it seems that i have one more li'l obstacle after making all the changes. i get the message that the dsm plugin is not compatible or enabled... but it is and is working fine without the repeater... i have it enabled/ready on the home office side (repeater) and on my laptop (starbucks side)... and included in my client (for the customer who needs remote support side).

when i quit the repeater, i get the message that the dsm plugin is missing or not compatible... so i'm assuming the problem is on the repeater side and not on the prospect or my side. i've copied the plugin files and rc key from my laptop to the repeater side to make sure it's using the same version... also all versions used are rel1.0 for laptop and server (and client prospect side).

any ideas? thanks!

yes, it possible to use machine name instead of ip address but only as mode I
mode II accept only ID number

classic error (I was this problem too ;-) )
I was submit to add a fix to Rudi, dev, for accepting lower case as logical usage of command line on Windows)

viewer: (take care uppercase of ID double dot number without space between ID:number!!!)
ID:7777

SingleClick: (take care lowercase and one space and number)
-id 7777

Only 1 space accepted as separator of every command

unrespect these conditions can happen unpredictable error as you seen
I tested my SC with viewer as same of your example and is work fine on local WLAN to LAN without windows firewall on any computer.

so, if everyone had a software/hardware firewall active, you need to try repeater II bypassing almost any firewall (without strong packet header checker)

ok.. regarding syntax etc... this is exactly what i have for testing.

i'm testing from my LAN to remote into another PC OUTSIDE my lan but the remote pc i'm trying to control will be behind its own nat router.

here's what i have on the vncviewer (admin side):
"C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -proxy 192.168.0.4:8080 ID:8888 -8bit -dsmplugin msrc4plugin_noreg.dsm -autoscaling -256colors

this is what i have on the remote client app's side:
-plugin -id 8888 -connect 177.27.12.5:80 -noregistry

notice single space, proper spellng, etc. ... so it's not my parameter or syntax that's causing the error, right?? what could it be?

i found a bug btw... if i set the admin side (the vncviewer side) to use port 80 instead of 8080... vnc will take it as 5080 instead of 80 as it should or one would expect.

is not a bug but advanced usage of VNC ;-)

well,
for your situation as non standard port of repeater, winvnc, vncviewer

viewer
-proxy 192.168.0.4:8080 --> -proxy 192.168.0::8080

SC
-connect 177.27.12.5:80 --> -connect 177.27.12.5::80

explanation applicable for any vnc flavor:

:display (0 - 99 == accept only 5800 to 5899(for http) and 5900 to 5999(RFB protocol)
example: port 5901 == display N° 1
::port (any port outside of standard port need double dot)
your example
::8080 (viewer)
::80 (SC)

hope this help
and sorry, is was a mistake of me, (I updated previous post for next reader)
updated FAQ,
Thank you for pointed out from non standard port usage of repeater that not happen if used as standard port.
