"failed at authentication"

Post by pslsr »

Hello: installed ultraVNC for wXP, stable version, installed dynDNS. Testing within our LAN (first) failed. Using the ultraVNC viewer, reason given was that the "connection has been rejected." Using netVNC viewer, the reason was the "connection failed at authentication." So this looks like a password problem. Is it?
-ultraVNC viewer does not show a place to type in password. Where can I input it?
-I put in a password in the ultraVNC server.
-I really don't know where to begin to track down the problem, there's so many possibilities.
-For the router (netgear, wired connections), there is a field where dynDNS is shown, a place to put host name (this is the full "host.domain.org", right?), user name and password. I put the dynDNS user name/password, and host name. That's right (the ultraVNC password to connect the 2 PCs does NOT go here)? NAT filtering-changing from "secure" to "open" made no difference. I don't have the router enabled as a DHCP server. Should it be enabled? For port forwarding, the instructions I saw said the name should be ultravnc1 and ultravnc2, I put the start & end ports as 5900 for vnc1, 5800 for vnc2, and put in the IP address of the ultraVNC server's PC. The dsl modem uses PPPoE, but since I'm testing on the LAN, should this matter?
-Does enabling the repeater interfere or help at all?
-I did disable zonealarm, and read thru the FAQ here, searched using "authentication" and "rejected" and found nothing relevant.

(later) There's also a 2nd router, which is not hooked up to the WAN, just a nice hub I guess. It's an Asante & I configured it too, would anything there interfere: I enabled dynDNS (same username/pw as for netgear router-for the dynDNS only, no pw input here for the uVNC), enabled DHCP, for distributed servers I kept the default port 113, left the server IP blank, but enabled.
Thanks.

The server reject the connection request (not a password issue), this may be caused by:
1. You had enable the "Query on incoming connection" feature at server, and the default action is "Refuse", or
2. You had a "AuthHosts" setting in registry or ultravnc.ini, which had setted to refuse connection from specific IP. If your viewer were running at a pc of these IP address, then the connection will be rejected

For first case, check the "Admin Properties" of the server.

For second case, use regedit.exe to see if you have this key at sever (for the case UVNC 1.0.2 or before):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3--AuthHosts
If this exists, you may either delete it (if you don't need to restrict of connection source), or change to a correct value that will not reject the IP of your viewer).

For UVNC 1.0.4, the AuthHosts setting is stored in the file ultravnc.ini

When the connection is established, the viewer will pop up a windows for password entry.

Have you installed any vnc clone software before? Maybe this is the result of a mess of the registry setting.

Thanks to Bevtech & YY for their thoughtful replies.
-Bevtech: I had put in the IPA & had read your prior post, before posting here. Made no difference, still failed, but thank you.
-YY- your first suggestion FIXED the problem! I saved your whole answer for the future, however. Thanks very much. Now to test it in the real world...
