Windows 7 Issues (and general questions)

Post by pjclifford »

I have just migrated from TightVNC to UltraVNC and I have some questions.

I have the UVNC server installed on a Windows 7 machine (dual boot with both x32 and x64). I have found little information about installing on Win7, but I am assuming that most things WRT Vista apply to 7. The first problem that I have is the disable Aero option on the server. When I connect from another machine (95% of the time it is WinXP x32), sometimes the Aero is removed and sometimes it is not. When it isn't, it the connection becomes almost unusable. Disconnecting and reconnecting does not seem to help in the short term. Sometimes, after a period of time (ie. hours) has elapsed, connecting to the Win7 machine WILL disable Aero.

I am having the exact same problem (however, not with the same frequency) WRT disabling wallpaper option. MOST of the time, it works. However, sometimes it does not. Again, reestablishing the connection does not work short term.

I am also using the DSM plugin option. Can you tell me, does that encrypt from the moment the connection is established? Ie. is the password sent encrypted?

I figured out that you need to save to a .vnc file to save viewer options between settings. One of them is auto-scaling feature. However, I do not seem to be able to save the percentage of scaling that I want to use. I adjust the scale slightly with some machines as they sometimes look better at a few percentage points difference than the default. Is there a way to save this setting?

Thanks!

Ok, I am a bit surprised that with 235 views that I haven't gotten a single response to any of the questions here. Did I violate some posting policy?

No, sometimes posts get overlooked, try to be clear and concise for faster answers.

Which UltraVNC version did you install?
Did you install it as a service?
Did you install the mirror driver?
Is this happening with both 32bit and 64bit?

Are you using a 3rd party background changing app?

Not sure, which DSM plugin are you using?

Thank you. I thought I had been a bad boy! :D

Which UltraVNC version did you install?
The latest stable version, 1.0.8.2

Did you install it as a service?
Yes. And I have manually restarted it a number of times to see if it would influence behavior and it did not.

Did you install the mirror driver?
When I did the install, I don't recall any option to install/not install a mirror driver. However, when I connect to the server, select properties, then click the button labeled "Check the video hook driver" (which I think is the mirror driver) I get a dialog box labeled "driver info: required version 1.22". The content of the dialog is "1.00.22 driver Active access ok." If that is not correct, I need some education in the mirror driver.

Is this happening with both 32bit and 64bit?
Yes. Although 64-bit has more prone to not disabling Aero and 32-bit is more apt to not disable the wallpaper. However, both behaviors occur with both versions.

Are you using a 3rd party background changing app?
No. I have a static wallpaper on both x64 and x32.

Not sure, which DSM plugin are you using?
The MSRC4Plugin.dsm plug in.

Since I wrote the original note, I am now tending to be using the x64 side of the dual boot more than the x32 as I stated in the original note (probably about 75% / 25% at the moment). However, the problem is still occurring.

Thank you for your response.

Looks like the mirror driver is installed and reporting that it's working correctly.

I personally haven't done a lot of testing with 7 and the mirror driver maybe it is causing the problem?

Try disabling the video driver by unchecking it in properties, or just uninstall it.

Interesting developments.

It seems that when the mirror driver is active, the chances of it not removing the wallpaper is very high. However, the chances of it not disabling Aero are low.

Disabling the mirror driver reverses the situation. It almost always disables the wallpaper, but it is much less likely to disable Aero.

So, which is worse on performance? Wallpaper or Aero? Plus, how much performance gain does the mirror driver provide?

I think the mirror driver provides significant improvement (at least it does in TightVNC). I am guessing that Aero is a bigger hog than wallpaper, since (a) once the wallpaper is cached it doesn't much matter anymore , (b) Aero affects EVERY screen element, and (c) you're not even likely to see the wallpaper if the user already has windows open.

For ordinary use, I'd suggest trying to keep the mirror driver. You can always turn off wallpaper and/or Aero after you've successfully connected....

Sorry to necropost...

I'm running UltraVNC to control a media center so I don't really want the Screen Resolution to drop down when I remote in.
After doing some research I found that windows 7 Aero doesn't play well with multiple drivers and multiple displays. I had to disable the mirror driver in the manage devices snap-in to get it all to play nicely.
