Win XP 'run as' will not work

Post by buksida »

I have successfully setup UVNC on one machine at work and can remotely control the box from my laptop as intended.

I would like to do the same with other computers however after installation the Windows XP "run as" box pops up and asks me 'Which user account do you want to use to run this program?'

No matter what I select it gives me an error "logon failure" or something. There is only one admin account on the machine (XP SP3).

Advice welcome, thanks.

I still get that on XP with UltraVNC 1.0.8.2 running as a service, whenever I try to change Admin Properties through the GUI... it seems to happen when the running UVNC tries to write the changes to the Ultravnc.ini file.

Apparently you have to uncheck "Protect my computer" at the prompt -- it worked for me.

I guess this is because the service is running as SYSTEM while the interactive user you're controlling is not? Not sure, but I think that behavior should be changed.

One error was:

"ultravnc.ini
Permission denied: Uncheck[_] Protect my computer... in run as dialog or use with write permission."

Reason for runas.

uvnc_service run as system
user is non admin user

If we change the settings without runas, you make them as "system".

Using runas, we actual downlevel the "system" access to the current desktop or entered user/passwd acces level.

Thanks for the replies. I have unchecked "protect my computer" and it no longer throws up the "run as" errors but it doesn't actually save any of the changes I've made and will not allow a remote connection.

I've also contacted the ISP but I dont think the problem is there because the machine next to it works fine.

Thanks Rudi. At least in my case the logged in user is an administrator, so I'm not sure why I still get the prompt. I still find the prompt confusing, even though I kind of knew what was going on.

Anyway, to buksida, you'll want to (a) install and configure the VNC server as a local administrator and (b) make all necessary changes to the settings/ultravnc.ini before you try to perform any remote access.

In ordinary use you should not be greeted with that prompt unless you make changes to the VNC settings, at least from what I understand.

(And your ISP has nothing to do with it.)

if had only copy and not installed trough setup... on the 2nd computer.
Remark bins: Never extract the exe direct (via iexplorer) from the zip.
If you extract them direct, uac mark the files as unsecure... and winvnc server doesn't work proper.
First save as zip then open via explorer...
run as ... is also good for XP, better protect, it annoying me, but i'm sure only computer admin can change properties even your admin (low level like user until pop up where your are computer administrator privilege like vista/7)
UltraVNC 1.0.9.6.1 (built 20110518)
OS Win: xp home + vista business + 7 home
only experienced user, not developer

Thanks for the comments, but still no joy.

I'll try Windows Remote Desktop but may come back to this thread if I need VNC back again as that is what I'd prefer to use.
