quick newbie question

Post by thimes »

Installed ultraVNC on my Windoze 7 PC. Server working.
Installed ChickenVNC on my MAC OS 10. Client working and connected.

Windoze requires login but there is no Cntrl-Alt-Del on the MAC!!

Yikes! Cntrl-Option-Esc does not work.
Cntrol-Shift-Option-Esc does not work.

How do I simulate the Cntrl-Alt-Del on my MAC Keyboard???

First Google hit for "cotvnc ctrl-alt-del" yields the following:

<i>Here’s how:
Chicken of the VNC a free popular open source VNC client for the Mac offers keyboard shortcuts including Control-Alt-Delete under the Connection -> Special Keys menu. But if you are using Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection, Apple Remote Desktop, or Leopard’s built-in Screen Sharing this will probably work for you.

How to send Ctrl-Alt-Del to a Windows PC
For full-size (desktop) keyboards, use Control + Command (Apple key) + Forward Delete.
Note: The Forward Delete key is located below the Help key on a full-size keyboard. Be sure not to confuse it with the Delete key located above the Return key.

For abbreviated keyboards (on portable computers), use Function + Control + Command (Apple key) + Delete. </i>

Or you could just navigate to the target VNC PC's Java server in your web browser (default at port 5800) and not bother with CotVNC.

This was taken from you link;

But none of these work. My PC locks up in 15 min (company policy) with a screen-saver lock. Any attempts to login again via my MAC and "Chicken-of-the-VNC" does not work. It seems that my PC simply does not accept the commands. I have set everything up on my PC according to directions, i.e. remote access etc. Any ideas???
Thanks for all your help.

Well, first try to confirm whether the problem lies with the Mac or not, by testing with a Windows or Linux version of a VNC viewer. I'm not a CotVNC user so I can't test it at present You might also try http://www.karlrunge.com/x11vnc/ssvnc.html instead.

Ok. Do you know if TightVNC viewer works "with" UltraVNC or "replaces" UltraVNC on my PC???

Karl's product is a viewer, and it should work with your existing UltraVNC server just as CotVNC did/does, but I wouldn't guarantee it. Naturally same-branded stuff generally works better together; that is, if you were to run the UltraVNC viewer on your computer (perhaps in a virtual Windows machine) you'd probably get better results talking to your UltraVNC server, and you'd get back features like file transfer...
