IP problem?

Post by 310 »

hi,

i am running the ultravnc server as a service on a win 7 laptop.

i am using the real vnc viewer on my iphone.

i am only connecting over my home LAN.

i installed it yesterday, and everything worked fine. i entered the laptop IP#, and name in the viewer, and it connected right away.

now, today, i can't connect. the laptop has been in standby a few times during this time.

i checked, and the service is still running on the laptop.

the laptop has a different IP# than yesterday...

what i have found, is that if i run ipconfig on the laptop, it gives one IP#, which is the same # as indicated by my router for the laptop. it's different than yesterday.

but, if i mouse over the ultravnc icon in the system tray, it shows a third IP# - not the same one as yesterday, and not the same as ipconfig.

i entered each IP# in the viewer, but could not establish a connection, either way.

UltraVNC has had a glaring bug/behavior (that I thought was fixed in newer versions?) where it will NOT detect changes in the network setup, DHCP changes, etc.

Some people have the WinVNC service scheduled to restart itself because of that.

I would suggest that in your case the best approach might be to simply assign a static local IP address to your laptop. You can also try connecting by its host name instead. If NetBIOS is working the host name should resolve.

The executable file for the VNC server component of UltraVNC and other implementations of VNC is usually named "winvnc.exe". (This may have changed in the latest version; I don't know.) And some people run it as a Windows service so it's always available.
