Need help

Post by homietx34 »

I was asked by a friend to help her remove a fake antivirus program. I didn't know how to tell her so I tried out the UltraVNC. I do not know any way of connecting.

I've read I need to create files and port forward and use the Server or Viewer while she has to download and install the latter.

Can someone give me details of how I can get this thing to work and how to use it to connect.

Where I stand right now is, I just installed uVNC and I haven't done anything else...

Honestly, for a one-shot troubleshooting situation I would suggest you use LogMeIn Free. It's a bit easier to set up, largely because the company provides a stable server to which both sides connect.

In the UltraVNC realm, you might check out ChunkVNC when you're ready to deal with things like port forwarding and/or a repeater.

But to answer your original question:

1. Install UltraVNC server as a service on the friend's PC.

2. Forward port 5900 at the friend's router to the local IP address of the friend's PC.

3. Connect from your remote site with VNC Viewer to the public IP address of the friend's router.

Yeah I looked into LogMeIn and it looked like a complicated interface. So I tried with UltraVNC.

So my friend needs to port forward 5900 and install the server version while I use the viewer right?

That's correct. But if you find LogMeIn confusing I think you may have a lot of trouble with VNC! Or maybe not; to each his or her own.

Also, be sure to have your friend set a decently difficult password. I would also suggest you use a port other than 5900 (since it's commonly scanned by Internet worms).
