UltraVNC, NComputing, and Microsoft MultiPoint Server 2011

Post by dcumming »

Good afternoon,

I work in a school district and have just started using UltraVNC. This summer our district is implementing Microsoft MultiPoint Server 2011 and NComputing in the classrooms. This is a form of virtual computing. The NComputing devices are small boxes that connect back to a host PC via USB. The models we have can run up to 10 terminals off of 1 host. Instead of having 4 separate PCs in each classroom we will have 1 host PC with 4 NComputing boxes connected via USB. The OS on the host PC will be Microsoft MultiPoint Server 2011 which manages the sessions. The MultiPoint sessions are Windows 7. Even though there is 1 PC each of the 4 monitors, keyboards, and mice will function as a separate terminal.

My question is will it be possible to use UltraVNC with this setup to interact with each session? I currently have a test environment set up like this with UltraVNC installed but I can only connect to the first terminal. Is there a way to switch between terminals? There are 4 total but they all have the same name as the host and are all using the same IP. I looked online but couldn't find any information pertaining to this type of setup. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Man, everything old is new again. These used to be called "terminal servers"!

In the end you're just using good old Remote Desktop Protocol.

So the question is really whether / how to run independent VNC servers within each remote desktop. I should know the answer to this by now, but I don't, sorry. I think it's possible. (I also think it's a little ridiculous that this latest version of Citrix / Terminal Services STILL doesn't include that kind of direct remote control/monitoring functionality?)
