Will UltraVNC work on Mac running Windows 7 via Parallels

Post by roxanne113 »

Sorry to bug you guys, but I am in a situation where my husband needs to check on and help out with my son's work (homeschooler) while he's (husband) going to be out of the country. Most of the software that we use for homeschooling is Windows based. Would it be worth my time to set up UltraVNC? I have a mac running snow leopard, parallels 5 and windows 7 home edition.

Let me know if this can work.

PS. I am mostly computer illiterate, so be kind.

It should work just fine, actually, although I haven't personally done it. You'd just forward the necessary ports from your son's home router to the local IP address of the Windows 7 virtual machine inside Parallels. (Assuming that the VM has a different IP address from that of the Mac itself.)

Instead of VNC (and simpler to set up), you could also use something like LogMeIn Free to control the Windows VM AND/OR control the overall Mac.

Thank you for the response. I'll try the LogMeIn free first (I like simple). I am confused, however, that the virtual machine would have a different IP address than the mac. This could be my illiteracy cropping up. Do all virtual machines automatically have a different IP address?

Usually, yes. The idea is that it's going far to pretend (virtualize) that it's a completely separate computer, so it needs its own "video card" and "network card" and so on. And the virtual network card is typically assigned a unique IP address on the local network. The virtual machine and its host are really separate computers.

I use to use the original Hamachi (VPN) on my PC and HamachiX (VPN) on my MacBook Pro to create the secure tunnel between the two...and actually control one by the other via a VNC program. Wasn't aware of UltraVNC at the time, but it looks good.

A new iPad forced the Mac's OS upgrade from 10.4 (Tiger) to 10.5 (Leopard)...which broke HamachiX. But, after reading this forum post, checked back with LogMeIn guys and saw a new version of Hamachi available for both platforms. (Thanks B). I'll set them both up (and using UltraVNC on my PC)...and post back here.

Well..good news. The new, free LogMeIn Hamachi is working fine on both my MacBook Pro and my PC.
