Access Logged Out Computers?

Post by recipeguy »

Hi there,

First, apologies if the answer to this question is obvious, I have had a hunt around the forum and as yet have been unable to find the answer (I'm an absolute newbie having previously only used LogMeIn).

I recently installed VNC on 2 computers, both running Windows XP. What I need to konw if how do I access the computer if they have logged out.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.
Phill

Hi Phil (interesting avatar).

As long as you installed UltraVNC as a SERVICE, it will continue to run whether or not anyone is logged in. The install as a service option is a standard feature in your Start menu Programs group for UltraVNC.

You just run the VNC Viewer and connect to the host name or IP address of the target computer, exactly as you would when they're already logged in. (In practice you may then be bumped off after you log in, and have to connect again.)

It's getting to the machines from outside your network that makes things harder than LogMeIn (which naturally has a remote proxy/repeater in place to avoid firewall issues). There are several ways to deal with that, but that's not the issue you asked about. :)

Hi B,

Many thanks for your ultra-fast response and clear advice, I will make sure I've installed UltraVNC as a service and try again.

Thanks again for your help.
