No Internet VNC Access

Post by cffdfireman »

Hey Guys,

I have a problem I am trying to sort out. I have access using the VNC to the server computer via LAN but cannot access via Internet. For the life of me cannot figure out how to get this to work. I am using a Linksys WRT54GS Ver. 5 router. I have opened port forwarding via instructions on portforwarding.com. I am using DSL with a static IP. Any more info I left out? I am a ham radio operator and going to use a program to run audio through the internet. This computer is going to be at a remote location and would be difficult at times to get to the computer for updates on the ham radio software. Thank you in advance for any and all help I get to complete my project.

I use a program called dyndns to keep my IP address alive on the internet, have a look, it's free to set up and works well with uVNC.

Once you have the port forwarding set up create a dyndns account and create a suitable name like cffscomputer.dyndns.org then in your viewer window type in cffscomputer.dyndns.org::urport# If you are using encryption don't forget to select your plugin. the program should show you the challenge window if it hits your server correctly.

I think on your router you can query the status of all machines locally using the client DHCP table...I'm not at home but try searcing along the Linksys Tabs when inside your admin page of the router.

Nah, cffdfireman claims to have a static IP address -- dynamic DNS software is unnecessary. All he has to do is hard code a name at any registrar or DNS provider he wishes.

From the machine that will be the "server", visit ShieldsUp and confirm whether you really have a port (default 5900) open for VNC. If not, then something is wrong with either your router port forwarding or your PC setup.

Sorry guys I was wrong on the type of IP. I was using it for 2 days checking the IP and it never changed. But when I was fooling with it today it was different. So I must have a dynamic IP. I have an account at both dyndns.org and no-ip.com. But cannot figure out how to configure the router and setup my account at the websites I just mentioned. Sorry about the mistake on the type of IP.

Shields UP as B suggested, very cool site by the way to check if your ports are open.

Make sure on your router, you have specified which machine IP will be open on which port. Ie 192.1.168.100 port 5900 (Personally I don't use port 5900 I pick my own)

If you have the dyndns client running on your machine, you'll see the little icon in your system tray. Do you have the update client application running? Go through this wizard if not Once running right click on the icon in the system tray and select configuration. If all went well it should be showing you your xxx.homedns.org address or whatever address you signed up for. The status icon on the updater window should be good if all is set up.

Make sure the uVNC server is running and check the ports, right click=>Admin Properties. Make sure the password is set. I always Stop the service and restart the service when making changes to the server app. then check again to make sure everything has stuck.

Also make sure you firewall settings allow the winvnc.exe app to run. I'd turn off all the firewall stuff until you get through testing. I would also not enable any encryption until you can actually connect to your machine through your home network first.

It's a bit of a learning curve, but uVNC is one of the best programs I've ever used. I like it's flexibility, if only it worked like logmein or some other web based service...that would be the ultimate.

Good luck, let us know how far you have gotten.
