Compatibility

Post by mrt »

Hello,
I have a question that I could not find an answer for in forums, and maybe it is obvious. How compatible are the various flavors of the different VNC programs? For instance, we use an old version of RealVNC. We are looking to use UltraVNC because of Windows 7 installs. Do we need to replace RealVNC on all the computers with UltraVNC or can we (at the helpdesk) have multiple versions of VNC on our PC's? Or better yet, would the UltraVNC viewer work with other flavers of the VNC server? Thanks.

Maybe / probably.

If just the bare minimum VNC configurations were used, then yes, the current UltraVNC viewer should be able to attach to your existing VNC servers.

It's when you've moved beyond the base RFB and old AT&T VNC standards, with extra encodings or encryptions or security or extra features like file transfer or MSLogon, that incompatibilities emerge among the various VNCs. Most, but not all of the time, things will degrade gracefully.

Thanks for the info. Is it an issue to have multiple versions of the VNCviewer on a PC (my plan B if I run into any incompatibilities)?

Actually, that usually works pretty well!

The viewers don't rely too much on the registry, and thus are pretty stand-alone. I'd just keep them in different directories.

By the way, if you're controlling a lot of computers you might want to check out something like mremote or iTalc. I think you could even configure different flavor VNC viewers with mremote if you needed to.
