Server and Viewer

Post by jules »

Good morning. I need to know if I can have one computer set up as a viewer and a server. Obviously they can't be used at the same time....but is it feasible?

I'm not 100% sure I understand your question, but any combination of server/viewer on the same computer is possible.

If you're talking about viewing the server via itself, that is doable as long as loopback connections are enabled.

If you're talking about viewing servers on other computers while running a server on the viewing computer, that is possible and very standard. As a matter of fact, you can run a lot of viewer sessions on a single computer.

Thanks Ben,

I need to use a computer that is already set up as a viewer in my office to be a server for a home based computer. So your third scenario is what I think I'm looking for...

What are the steps to accomplish this?

Let's see if I understand:

[HOMEPC] ----VNCViewer over INTERNET----> [WORKPC w/VNCServer] ----VNCViewer over LAN ----> [OTHERPC w/VNCServer]

You just need to install the server component on any computer you want to be able to view from a remote computer. If you are traversing a public network (i.e. internet), then you need to make sure the firewall configuration allows the necessary ports and any NAT'ing is configured for it as well.
