Keeping the password the same

Postby EpsoMed » 2012-08-17 09:37

Hi,

I have UltraVNC installed on all our PCs. It mostly works well but I regularly get "authentication rejected" errors and need to talk the user though the process of resetting the password.

I set the password the same on all PCs straight after installation it and this problem can happen on PCs I have previously connected to with out a problem.

I install the ultraVNC server to run silently and as a service. All users have roaming profiles.

I think it may be something to do with different users logging in since most users move around a lot.

Please can someone confirm how the password is saved? I need a way to ensure the password remains the same regardless of which user is logged in.

Thanks in advance for any help.

passwd is saved in ultravnc.ini file.
If you change the password but for some reason the file is not writable, the passwd is only temp changed in memory.

*user has no permission to save passwd
*if the desktop user is domain admin, the service running as local system doesn't have permissions to impersonate this desktop user -> not saved

workaround
-use the ultravnc_settings.exe util
-start winvnc as application ( no impersonation need to be done)
-create a ultravnc.ini refference file and distribute this file to all pc's

Thanks Rudi, I'm not sure how to do your workaround, I can't see anything in the ultravnc_settings util to create a new ini file. Do you mean start winvnc as an application on all PCs?

Can I just copy the ini file from a PC I know is set correctly?

Just to confirm, do I need to be logged in as local admin or domain admin for the setting to be saved? I would prefer to find a way to make sure the password is saved when I first install it.

ultravnc_settings.exe is a seperate exe on your system ( same folder as winvnc.exe).
You can use this utility to make changes to the config ( Just keep in mind that changes become actiove after
winvnc is restarted).

The permissions needed to create a ultravnc.ini in the "program files/ultravnc" depend on your system settings.
Usual this is restricted to elevated admins.

The ultravnc.ini file is NOT system depended, you can create it on any system and copy it to another.
