Current state of affairs

Post by tjl »

Help please!! Having run around the forum and PCHelpWare site for a couple of days, I'm totally confused as to the best approach to take to set up my self-hosted helpdesk remote desktop support environment. I have used UVNC for a number of years, but in a very controlled way through VPN tunnels. The servers were installed as Windows Services, so were always available.

What I want to be able to do now is:

1. Invite my client to visit my website to download, install and run an application to invite me to connect to her system. She should be shown a one-time security code that she gives me over the phone. Ideally I'd like to customize this application to spam it with my company info.

2. Connect from my viewer to her system by presenting the correct security code, probably to my repeater. I can run my repeater on W7, W2008R2 or Debian Linux (preferred).

3. For most of my clients, VNC is a low usage support tool. I may pre-install it on some systems, in which case, I will want it be available for future use, but don't want it running unless I need to connect.

This seems to me to be a pretty generic VNC scenario. Where I get confused is deciding which UVNC components to use: UVNC and Single Click, NAT2NAT, ChunkVNC, PCHelpWare. .... What I'm looking for is an open source solution based on current, supported technology, that I can completely self-host.

This question has probably been answered elsewhere in the forum, but I haven't been able to find it.

Tom
