2 times vnc server in taskmanager on silent host

Post by Pascali »

Hey guys. There is 2 times vnc server in taskmanager on silent host. Why? Why not 1 time? And what does this option "restart service" mean, that you can choose on silent server?

Many apps use multiple processes, it's very common, also used in tightvnc - I can't remember if that uses 2 or three. Don't worry about it - the non-silent server does the same. It's possibly the service and "control-app" in systray that's separated.

Restarting the service simply means to stop the service and start it again afterwards, to fix instability issues or reread changes to configuration files done.

Maybe you can help me? :) What does silent server mean? I've googled it alot, but the search results always got skewed with silent install instead. I tried as test installing a silent server, and the icon still was shown in systray - which makes sense since there is an option in ultravnc.ini to control that, so no need for "silent server" for that. If I remember correct, then the icon also turned yellow as indicater when connected to it, or do I remember wrong and this was the answer? The name sure sounds like someone want's to keep the user unaware of a VNC server is running, for monitoring purposes e.g. a company or spouse, but again, that wasn't the case when I tested it? Thanks in advance.

thank you, so after installation the service will be restarted? That is meant with "restart service"-option? So not every time Windows starts? I thought 2 times in task-manager - so 1 time it´s maybe because of the restart-service-option.

What does "run as service" mean in general?

I don´t know what silent server means - sry. I firstly thinking about that now - after reading you post ;)

session0 is the service session, isolated from all other sessions.

You have 2x winvc.exe

1 x service, running in session 0
1 x in the active desktop session usual session 1, but when you have multiple users it can also be another

The service is responsible
+for monitoring the sessions and restarting winvnc in the correct session.
+in case something goes wrong ( winvnc crash or you close it from the systray) the service restart winvnc.
+provide a high permission to allow winvnc to switch the desktop.
In a session you have multiple desktops ( default, logon, uac...) only a service is allowed to interact with another then the
defaull desktop. You can control high security apps like the usermanager
This is usefull when you want to make sure you can connect anytime to your pc.

You can run winvnc in application mode. You just start it like a normal application
winvnc run as the desktop user, with permission of that user
If you start winvnc as normal user can can NOT interact with application like the taskmgr to be able todo that you need to start winvnc with runas admin.
This is usufull to temp run vnc to get or give support. There need to be someone on the other site to help you interact with the secure applications.

Yes, restart service only refers to right now and not about at windows boot and isn't related to the two icons in task-manager. As fresh install you want it started, and as an update you wan't it restarted, hence the option. A service means running the app in the background(like on *nix as a daemon) usually upon every boot so always available and in the case of ultravnc is nice because it adds some extra features like being able to control UAC prompts and I believe fast-user-switching etc.

About the silent server, lol, no problem mate :)

Edit: Beaten by Rudi with a much nicer detailed explanation :)

LOL! Good one :) I find it very valuable, also for others than just the OP i'm sure, to get to learn more about what's actually going on. Sorry for stupid question, but as the thread is about the "silent" server, and so not completely off-topic, then could you please explain what this "silent" functionality specifically consists off, thanks? I checked it before and saw e.g. the systray icon still exist. I couldn't find the answer through googling.

Normal silent install means without asking questions.

A silent server ? : Perhaps a server with a hidden systray ( ultravnc.ini option)

From http://www.uvnc.com/docs/uvnc-server/69 ... ncini.html
DisableTrayIcon=0
Don't show the winvnc tray icon. Without the tray icon you can't make realtime changes. You need to edit the ultravnc.ini manual or use the uvnc_settings.exe to modify the file. Settings take efect after winvnc restart.

Sorry Rudi :) I'm talking about the IS installer, which during install lets you select in addition to "Server only", also "Server only "silent"". I checked it once, and the systray icon still was enabled, and I also knew there where a systray-disabling option already, so no need for such an install-option aditionaly. I believe it's not in the MSI installer, now that I think about it, and because of your answer :) Googling it is practically impossible because of the obvious skew of silent installs.

Rudi, humble bump about the question asked in post above. I just tested it yet again, and I remembered correct in that the "server only "silent"" option of the inno-setup installer doesn't disable the system-tray icon, and also doesn't hide a connection made, visually i.e. the icon goes yellow as indicator instead of blue. Thanks in advance.
