GPL doesn't allow bunding of GPL and non GPL software

Post by dsach »

Hi there,

on the UltraVNC home page, there's a hint below the table, stating that "GPL doesn't allow bunding of GPL and non GPL software. If you want to use Ultra VNC or Ultra VNC SC in combination with a commercial software you need to create a seperate installer or let your installer download Ultra VNC."

For me, the term "bundling" is not clearly defined. According to my understanding of the GPL, the statement above is only true when I'd e.g. develop an application with GPL- and non-GPL libraries.
The GPL should not be violated, when you e.g. sell a PC with your own commercial software running and additionally & independently having UltraVNC pre-installed, is that right? :)

But even if that example is a problem with the GPL, would it then suffice to deploy the UltraVNC executables without the setup installer? Why does the installer make a difference at all? :what?:

Thank you :)

You can sell a PC with GPL software installed without any problems.

For bundling there are many opinions, just to avoid all discussion if your installer download the GPL sofware during installation
it's 100% seperated. Our just use 2 installers..
Some people say that creating a single installer combine the programs in a single bundle.
