cannot playback mpeg files via UltraVNC

Post by gennady »

I have a setup of two Windows XP computers with the latest version of UltraVNC. I would like to be able to see a playback of mpeg files (actually divx) on one computer via UltraVNC connection. (I understand that I should not expect a smooth playback, but this should be enough for my purposes). Everything works fine with my setup except when I start DivX player (or Microsoft Media Player) with an avi file. The window of the player in the UltraVNC is just a black rectangle. I tested that if I connect my other computer it to a monitor, the playback is perfectly fine -- so the problem is with the UltraVNC. I have the same problem with RealVNC, as well as with PCAnywhere.

Did anybody have this kind of problem?
Any clue what the problem is?
Thanks.
Gennady.

I've read something about this and IIRC it's to do with the hook driver and the way it works. Video playback is overlayed and therefore doesn't show up on ultravnc.

Try it without the hook driver installed as this may give different results.

Alternatively wait for someone with more than a clue than me to turn up and tell you for sure but not being able to see the playback is normal and expected.

Cheers

With and without the hookdriver overlay is not supported.
But if you tell the media player not to use hardware acceleration (playback options), you get about 25fps
for a 640x480 video when you use the video driver and have
a lot of bandwidth :)
