logon problems

Post by skimball3 »

I recently reinstalled xp on my desktop and in the process lost the ability to log onto the remote site. Laptop still logs on fine. I believe that I have disabled xp firewall, fast user switch etal. I have zone alarm fire wall on both ends. Ping does not work. (Fire wall on the other end?) Any thoughts on what I might have missed? Is there a way to define a port (5900) for pinging that would work? Appreciate any help,

Zone Alarm

Post by lenisham »

Personally I completely removed zonealarm due to issues with any vnc on XPs with zonealarm.

The other possibility is loading SP2 with tightens security and will enable the firewall on installation.

You can edit the XP Firewall to open some ports see this previous post:

1. I use XP and I'm behing a router/firewall/NAT..

Don't blame XP for ZoneAlarm's inabilities. It's just a bit falkey.

OK. But I completely removed zonealarm (add/remove programs) and I still have the same problem. Had zonealarm installed previously with xp on this unit and it worked fine.
Now what?

Dig through the registry and directory structure to see if there is anything left behing by the uninstall. Check the XP firewall settings.

I ran XP, ZA, and many flavours of VNC (including Ultr@) for years with no issues at all. Give VNC server rights and internet rights, and Bob's your uncle.
