Further development of the java-applet: Developers needed!

Post by buggybunny »

Hi folks,

i really think the java vnc-viewer is a good piece of software.

Unfortunately, it has several shortcomings:

- There seems to be no further development in the last two years, i.e. this subproject seems to be dead.
- There are many subtle bugs (see below)
- No offense, but it is coded like some C-developers were forced to code Java for 5 - 10 days.
- Many "nice to have" features are missing, for example multiple filetransfers

Since i really do like the java-applet, i decided to fix some bugs and to add some new functionality.

Bugs i fixed so far:

- If the user creates a new remote folder but cancels the request, a new folder named "null" is created anyway.
- Some remote Folder are shown as files, which means you can not open or browse them

Features i added:

- Directroy-entries are not sorted, which can be a real pain in the ass if you consider directories with > 1000 entries

Bugs i would like to see fixed:

- If you copy data from a directory with a very long name the opposite window gets overlapped after the transfer. It is not possible to transfer further data.

- When creating directories and receiving files the layers or div tags gets resized and the action buttons (Receive, Send, Close etc..) becomes less and less visible > invisible. Then the only thing to do is to disconnect the Remote Session and restart it and then bring up the file transfer window again

- Many more i am to lazy to mention right now. I will name them all when a bugtracker is available

Features i would like to see implemented:

- Transfer of directories

Questions to the administrators:

Is this idea approved by you at all?

If so:

- Is it possible to use the current java vnc applet branch in the CVS?
- Is it possible to establish a dedicated mailing list?
- Is it possible to create a corresponding sub-forum at ultravnc.com?
- Is there a bug / CR-tracker like Jira which could be used?

Hi,

Thanks for you feedback and participation :)
You are right, the JavaApplet has been a little let alone this past year... and can be improved a lot.

So it's good news that you have fixed some bugs and added some features !
Please feel free to send them (ultrasam@users.sourceforge.net), I wil will check all this and add it to the source tree so they can be integrated in the upcoming 1.0.4 version

For the applet coding style... :D some very old code here, and from various people.

To answer your questions:

- Is it possible to use the current java vnc applet branch in the CVS?
Yep, it's up to date, the SVN one as well.
But Rudi, Marscha and I are the only ones allowed to add/update some code in CVS/SVN for now.

- Is it possible to establish a dedicated mailing list?
No. Not planned

- Is it possible to create a corresponding sub-forum at ultravnc.com?
Yes it is. Gonna try to do it asap.

- Is there a bug / CR-tracker like Jira which could be used?
Not really. You can use the tracker, though: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=63887
Otherwise we can add a Sticky thread "JavaViewer bugs" at the top of the still-to-be-created JavaViewer forum entry.

Thanks again

Hi again,

Yep, it's up to date, the SVN one as well.

Hmm, ok,

is there a possibility to create a separate CVS-subbranch to which other people have commit-status?

Because the thing is, i'm hoping to find other developers who would like to help.

But i think if really nobody can commit any code to the CVS but has to send it via email, this will become a nuisance over the time and finally prevent people from helping....
- Is it possible to create a corresponding sub-forum at ultravnc.com?
Yes it is. Gonna try to do it asap.
:-)
- Is there a bug / CR-tracker like Jira which could be used?
Not really. You can use the tracker, though: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=63887
Otherwise we can add a Sticky thread "JavaViewer bugs" at the top of the still-to-be-created JavaViewer forum entry.
Oh, the bugtracker seems be sufficient. Maybe something like "most annoying Bugs"?
So it's good news that you have fixed some bugs and added some features !
Please feel free to send them (ultrasam@users.sourceforge.net), I wil will check all this and add it to the source tree so they can be integrated in the upcoming 1.0.4 version
I will send it to you tomorrow. (First i have to remove all my annoying debug-Code.....:-)
