Just tried using Java viewer -- connection timed out

Post by bill02888 »

Update: I just read another post that said that two ports are required for JavaView. I added the other port as an exception to the Windows Firewall so that I now have two ports enabled on the monitor-less PC, both using TCP: 5800, 5900. On my first attempt at using the software I accepted the certificate, was prompted for (and entered) my password, then the single line "Error: Incorrect tight palette size 8" was displayed and I could get no further. At the time that I saw that error I was already connected to the monitor-less PC via the UltraVNC client. When I closed the client and refreshed the Firefox window, I was then able to connect to the monitor-less PC.

I've been using UltraVNC to access a monitor-less PC on my home LAN from another PC on my home LAN. It works great. I recently noticed that the server has support for a JavaViewer. I tried it. The connection times out. Firefox says "The server at artax is taking too long to respond."

The monitor-less PC has "Incoming Connections" set to "Auto" with the "Enable JavaView (Http Connect)" box checked.

When using the UltraVNC client I simply connect to Artax, then UltraVNC prompts for my password and voila! To try out the JavaViewer I used the URL http://artax:5800/.

I'm using UltraVNC 1.0.2 build Jun 18 2006 14:56:09 on both computers.

I use the latest version of Firefox on Windows XP SP2 with all updates and fixes.

I must be missing something exceedingly simple.
