4 bit colors?

Post by joefu »

It has probably been asked already but I have to ask again. Is there a way to make UltraVNC send only 4 bit colors? I only have a 28.8 K connection to the internet and I was hoping that it would make my screen update faster by sending less colors.

Thanks,

Well, no 4 bits neither Greyscale colors yet...

Over slow modem I personaly use the 1/2 Server scaling trick through the "Fuzzy" and "Half size" screens modes (vncviewer viewer menu), or the "Slow" quick option at viewer startup (whci actually uses "Fuzzy" mode + 256 colors + bitmap cache.

This way, only 35/40% of the screen data is sent from the server compared to the non server downscaled screen -> it makes a big boost.

Ok, it's... fuzzy but sill usable and provides good responsivness over 28K modem connections...

If you don't like fuzzy, always use the "modem" quick option (ZRLE, 256 colors + cache). It's quite good over 28K anyway.
If possible also use the Video Driver on server side: it helps over slow connections.
