UltraVNC connection TEST.

Any feature you'd like to see in Ultr@VNC? Just propose it here.

UltraVNC connection TEST.

Postby kikoseis » 2009-10-19 14:09

When we install vnc it is not possible to make a test.

The only option is to call to a friend, to say to him that he run UltraVNC Viewer, to give him to the our public IP and the UltraVNC port, and say to him that he tries if the connection works.

it is possible to create a button in the properties of ultravnc server to test the connection?.

When press the button would open to a Webpage with the results of the test (for the our public IP, and for the UltraVNc configured port).

It is a form to avoid surprises when we trying to connect to home computer from abroad computer and obtaining like result an error (by problems of firewall or configuration).

Thus we would test in home the connection. (something similar to the test of firewall of emule)

Emule test page:
http://www.emule-project.net/home/perl/ ... =8888&l=17

(for example this url test tpc port 9999 and udp 8888)

the secret is to try connect to our home PC from an external server who tests if UltraVnc server respond.

Similar idea:

http://www.realvnc.com/cgi-bin/nettest.cgi

Problems:
It's no possible config port number.
It's no possible launch from PcServer client.

There are a lot of such services available from third parties, e.g.:

www.canyouseeme.org

http://www.whatsmyip.org/ports/

Thank you.
But it's no equal. Your pages check only port. This page check port (5900) and vnc server response:
http://www.realvnc.com/cgi-bin/nettest.cgi

...

The best thing would be a button in the ultravnc server properties screen configuration (port configuration zone) that does check:

1º that the port configured in ultravnc server is open.
2º that ultravnc server is answer through that port.

(something similar to the procedure of the test emule that I have said before)

In my experience most people don't install VNC open to the net ... they use a repeater connection or similar. so having it within the server configurations page is probably not the best solution ...

but having a tool that can do this would be handy ... but then how do you deal with DSM encryption ... as surely most people that DO leave VNC listening, don't leave it on the internet without DSM or better do they ??? (from my experience, yes they do ... there are literally thousands / hundreds of thousands of computers online with vnc free and open ... it makes me cringe)

so its a good idea, but in practise, a responce from the port checker is about as useful as you can get ... its either listening or not ...

You know, if you really want it, it can't be too hard to write it yourself. It's just sending a few bytes to a port and the posting the results to a web page. The key is you need to host it on your own server.

Something like cURL or wget would do fine, I'm guessing.

You seem to think it should be something offered by the uvnc.com web site? Personally I don't think it's that important, but I suppose it's something I might use on occasion. If you write it, perhaps they'll agree to host it.
