Function to leave notes on the client-desktop

Post by paperjam »

Hi

I just came up with an interesting idea that could be added to UltraVNC: The possibility to leave notes (similiar to "post-it"-notes) on a client-desktop.
Until now I used notepad to leave a message to the users when I modified something on their system over the night, so that they could read it in the morning. Wouldn't it be much better if UltraVNC could handle messages that would appear as "post-it"-notes on the screen?

What do you think?

I also use Notepad for the same purpose ;)

It's actually a good idea. Going to think about it. It would presumably be an option in the chat window to make the message persistent on the server screen.

Any suggestion about this is welcome.

I had one more thought about it: I think it would also be good if the size and the position on the screen could be chosen so that important things (like icons on the desktop) won't be hidden by the notes...

PS: Unfortunately I can not (yet) code this by myself because I only started programming in C++ a few months ago. :|

(I [paperjam] actually wrote that message. My login somehow didn't work so that it is posted as 'guest'...)

Dialog BOX

What about displaying a dialog box (windows alert window) with a custom message and the typical "OK" button?

That would probably be the easiest solution, but dialog boxes don't have much flexibility...

This option would be excellent.

A suggestion: make the server store a local copy of the message/messages. So in case of system freezing or rebbot of the server, the messages can pop-up again at restart.

This is one of the major problems I have with notapad...
If the server crashes or reboots for the excessive load, the message is lost!

With The UltraNote, you can avoid this saving the file locally and then displaying it on an note.

Also: I would prefer NOT to have a system window.
Those are confusing and sometimes used even by outside ad-messages (unless you switch off some of the XP parameters...).
Would be much better if we could really have a yellow small window popping-up or staying attached somewhere on the screen.

Since I'm not a native English speaker, my major interest about this is how it supports Unicode.
Now there's no help for Win9x but at least for NT it should be considered.
Will it support German? Can anyone leave message in Chinese? How do Arabic speakers communicate on it?

At this moment, the disappointing is "VNC Chat" has already been implemented without very much linguistic consideration.
You'll see just mysterious garbage putting some multi-byte characters in the text box defined as EDITTEXT in IDD_TEXTCHAT_DLG.

Some people still keeping on generating localized binary patches that supports their own languages, keycodes and fonts even for Ultr@VNC.
To say nothing of that different types of these arranged/non-arranged things, if used together, usually have compatibility problems.

The most important reason must be that even though there're very important keys used to switch input language between English and others on most non-English keyboards, any major VNC distribution isn't officially supporting it.

post-it notes

Post by joefu »

I think a good location for your post it notes would be in the lower right hand corner next to the Ultra VNC icon.

You can even have a post-it note show up when someone connect or disconnect to you. This way you know exactly who connected to your computer when you were gone.

Why not just net send them or email them?

I also do this, or I email them.

I suppose it would be nice to have something there that is more noticable though. I mean, notepad to the uneducated user just looks like some program that isn't supposed to be open.

And they may not get their email right away.

PostIT Notes

Post by Guest »

Hi,

Seems like a lot of us use Notepad to leave messages. :D

Email is not always the solution. Some retail outlets don't have access to email facilities though there are computers that are remotely monitored and maintained.

Exactly for this purpose, postIt notes would be very helpfull.
