UVNC V2 project for Longhorn and 3D rendering for viewer ?

Post by redge »

Longhorn completely reshapes the way Windows handles graphics. DirectX will become an integral part of the operating system, opening up a wealth of 3D technology to any applications.
source:
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1 ... 681,00.asp

it' is meaning, UltraVNC V2? can handle 3D object remotely ?
Why?
Some users ask for rendering game and application 3D object from viewer.

and will be good for support any user/customers for their 3D applications, object and game remotely :-)

Redge,

First of all, that article is MS marketing hype. Remember when Direct3D came out? What a mess! John Carmack wouldn't even use it. He went with OpenGL.

Secondly, *VNC* doesn't bother with graphics at all. Not now, and not in the future. VNC looks at the video frame buffer AFTER all the graphics have been rendered (RFB = remote frame buffer). It can display 3D graphics and games today. The limiting factor is how fast it can (optionally compress) transfer that information to a remote machine. Its the pipe that limits the bandwidth.

If you had to send the raw objects over the pipe and process them on the remote machine I suspect it would be significantly slower. Todays video cards have to be able to process hugh volumns of data (thus Vesa VLB, AGP, PCI Express were born).

Well, that's my take on it anyhow! ;-)

Does anybody have a newer copy of Longhorn? The beta copy I have is like a year old and the gui looks very similar to the Server 2003 gui. My copy is also very buggy. This gui does not utilize and special 3D stuff from what I can discern.

Basically, what I think he is saying is that Longhorn should not prevent UltraVNC from working.

Are you having trouble with UltraVNC on Longhorn? Which build of Longhorn are you running?

I may try loading up my copy of Longhorn again to see if I run into any trouble....

This is on build 4074 which was released last year. I got a newer build 5048 which I will install if I get some more time soon.

Actually what scovel is saying (at least I assume that) is that, no matter what news Longhorn brings to graphics rendering, it really won't affect UVNC.

UVNC doesn't do any rendering, it just takes the already processed video data of the remote machine "just before it is sent to the monitor" (very simplified description!)
