Automation...

Post by nobody »

When you are connecting to a large number of UltraVNC servers and all of them have a specific role, the life of an admin become tremendously easy if connecting to some server causes it to do some actions automatically.

what i have in my mind is something like batch file language along with a mechanism to refer to the client in the automatic actions. and then initiate file transfers or do whatever the admin desires.

would this be like a autoexec.bat when someone logs in via the VNC ?

if that's implemented that'd make our lives that much easier. Especially considering that many sites overseen have VNC on multiple subdirectories. Oh the horror of maintenance!

PC Anywhere for DOS had a very straightforward file transfer automation language some of whose features would go very well in VNC. It also had a more elaborate general scripting language which is not being wished for here.

You could run any executable on either the remote or the host machine and automate file transfers by referencing a list of files to be transferred (including wild-cards), and the direction of the transfer.

It was used by invoking the name of the script/batch file and after that 'stuff' happened on whichever machine was specified. I have long wished for that level of automation in VNC so often repeated actions, such as for off-site backup, do not require the tedious mouse work that is the only option so far.
