Max password length too short...

Post by Zorb »

The viewer application seams to have max password length, where the server does not appear to have a length restriction.

The standard VNC password limit is 8 characters, for backward compatibility with other VNC programs. I don't think you can set a longer one on the server. The standard way to deal with this limitation is by using an encryption plugin (DSMPlugin) or a VPN or SSH tunnel.

Actually the reason I found this thread is because you CAN set a longer one. Or at least it gives the impression you can. Right-click on the ultraVNC icon on the taskbar and choose "Admin Properties". There you can enter in a VERY long password, and it appears to take it. But Upon logging in via the Viewer, it'll accept just the first 8 characters. And upon going BACK into the Admin Properties, it appears it only took the first 8 letters, even though it displayed a bunch more as I typed it. :P

Just FYI... It seems everyone else has updated their systems to allow more than 8. I understand backwards compatibility and all, but really that's not a good excuse when every other software has updated their systems. just my opinion, I could be wrong :).

Thanks!
(btw, I switched from TeamViewer TO UltraVNC, so I appreciate the software, just commenting on the password issue... thanks!)

You can set a longer password by using the encryption plugin.
If plugin password is set, this replace the vnc passwd.
