Display-less client aka poor-mans KVM switch

Post by el_es »

Consider this setup:

- a windows (XP Pro) desktop, running UVNC viewer
- a Linux (Debian Wheezy) desktop, running e.g. vino [edit: i meant vncserver of any kind... i know vino is a client ;L ] or whatever vnc server application
- both desktops have monitors attached
- only one desktop (XP) has keyboard and mouse on it
- I want to share the clipboards and send kbd/mouse events to the Linux desktop VNC Server
- but I DON'T want uvnc to take over my XP desktop screen when i pull it to front, effectively repeating what the Linux desktop displays on the other monitor *in front of me*

- i imagine this working on a [shift/control/alt+scroll lock] combination or just by switching to uvnc viewer application, will 'arrest' the mouse pointer on XP and redirect it to the Linux desktop; or a key combo/option/button to do that when the uvnc viewer is fronted, and a way to release the input back.

- usually you'd do it with a hardware KVM switch, but I don't have any on hand and sw solution seems cheaper ;)
[edit: and the hw kvm switch don't share clipboards]

Thoughts?
