VNC Viewer Dashboard

Post by jeeejay »

Hello,

I think users out there who deal with multiple machines like me might agree to this thought.

Generally, I have around 10-12 machines open on my dual wide monitor desktop setup. I arrange 4 VNC Viewer windows horizontally and view them simultaneuosly across the two monitors. Then I keep toggling the remaining connections (which are always open and sitting on my taskbar) as needed. So three different machine occupying the same space on my monitor (3x4=12). Mostly, I only need to 'observe' or 'view' the processes running on those machines and intervene as and when necessary. I hope this makes sense.

It would be really nice if there was some kind of a viewer dashboard where one can create a tabular layout and assign a machine to each cell. Like, I would create a 4x3 layout and assign one machine to each cell. This is only for a scaled-down viewing purpose - if one needs to interact then they can click on the cell and the regular Viewer window would appear. This way, one could 'monitor' all the machines (in a zoomed-out view) and then choose which one to work with from a central location rather than having those many individual connections open.

Thoughts?

I think something like this has been made previously for the community, but I'm not sure how updated/supported it still is. I've seen this functionality in commercial products as well.

I think forum/Google searches are going to be your best bet.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for your reply.

I'd done a pretty thorough search before posting and all I could really find was some pricey switches as a solution to view multiple pc's on a multiple monitors but that's definitely not what I was looking for as I only want to 'view' and not 'work' with all the machines at the same time.

I'll keep searching and update the post if I come across something. Also, if you could find some more info or a link about the stuff that you mentioned then please share it with me.

All: Please share your thoughts on this.

Smartcode Solutions has an ActiveX control that allows you to create your own IE-integrated application with VNC support. I bought their plugin and used it to provide a web front-end to some of our systems for some vendors once. We no longer use it, but at the time it was a great solution that was very flexible since I controlled the code and design of the site. It's possible to do this without their plugin, but it saves a TON of time if you don't want to develop your own.

And don't you know, they also sell what you originally asked about (thumbnail view). I just peeked at their website and noticed it's their primary offering.
