[solved] Win7 - unable to connect Socket error while writing

Post by bobdabuilda »

Hi guys. First off - sorry if this has already been answered elsewhere. I've been Googling this on and off for a few days now, and have been unable to find anything which has been of any help.

I've installed 1.0.8.0 on both my server (in server-only mode) and my PC (full install).

it DOES connect when I try to remote, and I get a username/password auth box coming up (using windows auth mode), and when I submit the details, it immediately gives me an error bos with :

WriteExact: Socket error while writing.

On the server, I get a new system tray icon for each attempt which, when moused over, disappears again. I've tried different LAN speeds etc. to see if it was a network performance issue (didn't think so from the speed the error message comes back).

Server and my PC are both running Windows 7. Server is connected via a wireless G connection (it's just a HTPC rig, hence the "need" for remote control).

I've tried disabling the firewall on both PCs, with no difference.

Any suggestions on what else can be done to fix it, or tried to narrow down the cause ? Any help would be much appreciated :)

EDIT: having just seen the 1.0.8.2 has been posted up jsut now, i'll go try that and report back :)

Re: Win7 - unable to connect - Socket error while writing

First try with 1082, many bugs where fixed.

WriteExact: Socket error while writing== general error, network was broken. Usual this mean server closed, possible because ms auth answered false.

To narrow down the problem please start with a simple connection and move in steps to what you actual want to do.

-First try
*standard vnc authentication
*viewer on same pc as server ( enable loopback, server option)
If this works
*ms logon auth
if this works
*viewer on other pc

ms logon has 2 modes, win7 security possible block one, causing
this option to fail.
If the guest account is open -> ms logon fail (intended, security)
The guest account is linked to the way you share folders ( turn off simple filesharing close the guest access)

Thanks for the help!
Ok, what was done, for those of you that had, or are having, similar issues :
  • - Installed the update
    - Tested loopback - same issue.
    - Uninstalled, rebooted.
    - Installed full version.
    - Tested loopback with server running NOT as a service. Tested ok, no mouse clicks or movement going to server.
    - Turned off "Disable Viewers inputs" in Server Admin Properties.
    - Tested ok.
    - Ran the "Install as a service" from Start Menu
    - Ran "Start Service" from Start Menu
    - Tested ok.
So yeah - thanks for the help, and hope the feedback can help save someone else some time... heh :)
