Can connect locally but not remotely

Post by cyoung5 »

I have the latest 1.0.8.2 version installed on a Windows 7, 64-bit machine. I'm trying to connect using the Java browser connection. I've got my Norton firewall temporarily turned off. I got my router port forwarding 5801 to one of my machines and 5802 to the other machine. I can easily connect between either machine by browsing
http://192.168.1.101:5801 and similarly connect back again the other way to the other machine using http://192.168.1.102:5802

There is no problem in those connections. I have dyndns.org set up so that I can access my network from outside. If I type in my domain name or if I type in my actual public IP address and try to connect from a remote system I get the Java logo and it looks like it has loaded the applet. The title of my Internet explorer shows that I am somewhat connected to the proper machine because it tells me the name of my computer. However I never get the pop-up for a password.

I have a Linksys E1000 router and as I said before forwarding appears to be working as long as I'm in my local network. And in some respects even remotely it looks like it's finding the proper computer. For example if I try to connect to http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:5801 the title of Windows Explorer shows [Chris's computer] and if I connect to http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:5802 the title shows [Kenny's computer] which is the name of my two computers. But in either case I get no pop-up that asks me for a password. I do get the pop-up when I connect locally within my home network.

You never did say what ports you were forwarding. (And by the way, there IS no port forwarding involved when you connect locally; traffic never goes through the router logic.)

You're probably forgetting (as most of us do) that while the the Java applet runs on 5800 (by default) and is delivered back to the browser that way, once the VNC Viewer applet starts it's running regular old VNC, and it needs port 5900 (by default) to communicate over.

So just be sure that your target servers have unique "Main" ports defined, and make sure those ports are forwarded appropriately in addition to the http related ports you've already got working.

Good luck.

I was only forwarding 5801 and 5802 to XXX.XXX.XXX.101 and XXX.XXX.XXX.102 but I was not forwarding 5901 or 5902 because I never use the viewer just the Java version. I recently changed routers and I must have had them forwarded on the old router but not on the new one. I did the forwarding of the 5900 series and now it works just fine thank you.
