Black screen after initial login

UltraVNC ran fine for months and then suddenly this problem. I can log in (and see the Windows XP log in screen) but after that, black screen only. The mouse is working on the remote machine.

I am running Win 7 on the home machine and XP SP3 on the remote machine.

VNC viewer 1.0.8.2.

I think that my problem started after the last Windows update.

I have no idea how to implement the following solution, which I have seen in another thread:

Special settings
kickrdp

[admin]
kickrdp=1


What file is it that needs to be edited to put in those strings?

Where is that file located?

Is that fix solely for the machine running XP SP3?

default place:
%programfiles%\UltraVNC
UltraVNC 1.0.9.6.1 (built 20110518)
OS Win: xp home + vista business + 7 home
only experienced user, not developer
