Chunk on VMware

Post by reverett »

Hello,

Is it possible to run Chunk on a virtual machine? I've been testing on a regular machine and everything works great. I tried to test with the repeater running on a virtual machine and I get a wierd "not safe to run without password set" error when I try to make the InstantSupport connection. I didn't try the viewer as I could never get past the initial error.

Thanks!

Sure. Like most all programs (except for some malware) ChunkVNC's not going to know or care that it's in a VM. Just be sure that the repeater has its own static IP address and that the machines can reach each other.

Odd... I wonder what I was doing wrong. I'll give it another shot.

That message has nothing to do with the repeater.

Compiler now requires Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package for the password hashing executable. If it isn't installed compiling will fail!

Make sure you have it installed on the computer you use to compile InstantSupport or it will try to run without a password.

Well, I tried it again. As soon as I try to run the repeater from a vm I get a window titled "Ultr@vnc Property Page". I click OK at the bottom of that page and I get another window stating "WARNING: Running VNC without setting a password is dangerous...".

I have to cancel several times to get it to close. The repeater log never shows a connection.

I can copy the entire Chunk folder to a non-vmware machine, recompile for the correct IP address and everything works fine.

Any thoughts?

Sorry, I didn't see your other post. The compile comes back as successful but I'll give that a shot.

That worked. Thanks. I thought I read somewhere that you had Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package installed if you had run Windows Update. I must have misunderstood.

Thanks for helping me with this.

Your FAQ states:

Can I run InstantSupport on a computer that already has a VNC server running?

No, you must shut down the current VNC server before running InstantSupport.
Since version 3.2 most but not all VNC servers will be shut down automatically.

Does that apply only to InstantSupport? Would I be able to run a vnc server service on the same machine as the repeater?

No problem. I hope ChunkVNC helps you as much as it helps me. :)

InstantSupport is simply running the UltraVNC server, there are many VNC servers that won't allow simultaneous servers. InstantSupport will try to shutdown other servers but it sucks at it so it's best to stop them first manually.
The repeater is just a TCP redevous program so it's ok to run a VNC server on the same machine.
