"beeeeeep" if no network devices.

Post by Dr.Death »

Not a very nice feature ChunkVNC.
If you install a service ChunkVNC and "Disable" the network card, then every 5-7 seconds, hear no pleasant sound.

What should I do? What to do?

Disable the service when you disable the network card?

This is the first I've heard of the issue.

1. Install service ChunkVNC
2. Disable network card (the computer is only one network card)
3. Beeeeep (beep() - sleep(5000) - beep())

Thanks, but I understood you the first time. I was suggesting that the simple fix would be to stop the service whenever you chose to disable the NIC. You could write a little batch file to do it too.

This "feature" is part of the UltraVNC server, we'd have to compile an UltraVNC server with this removed... maybe Rudi could do this for us or at least give us an option to have it not beep.

I can't remember which thread but I believe I asked for the beep not to happen as well but it is only rare cases that you'd have the network disconnected trying to remotely support someone!

Note: It isn't recommended to have the service installed permanently anyways.

I really hope this feature will be controlled in future versions UVNC. I can not install the service on laptops, because as soon as you pull the USB 3G modem, so there is the sound.

I've had this problem with Windows XP based laptops. Not only does the System Beep sound every five seconds, but the cursor changes to an hourglass and back to normal too. Task manager shows that InstantSupportVNC.exe is starting, stopping, starting, stopping...

I've taken to disabling the system beep (by going to Device Manager, showing hidden devices, going to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers, Beep, and stopping the service/setting the start-up type to disabled). The cursor change is still a hassle, but at least the laptop isn't beeping all the time with no network connection present!

Having ChunkVNC installed as a service on laptops has many advantages. One notable one is the ability to "track" a lost or stolen laptop by watching for it to connect in the repeater log, noting the IP address, etc.

Rudi has removed the beep from the newest version of UltraVNC. Once released I will integrate it into ChunkVNC. :)

It beeps when it cannot connect to the repeater. Anything that prevents a connection will cause it to fail, wait a few seconds (9 seconds on a Intel Core 2 Duo machine I was testing with) and then it tries again. If it fails again, it beeps and sleeps before it retires.

The first time it did it to me, I had unplugged the network cable. Freaked me out until I figured out the source. 8)
