Newb to VNC

Post by measter »

I'm trying to help an XP user on broadband behind a router and I am behind an AirLink 101 router.

I have downloaded and installed to an XP box Chunk 3.3.1. My cable modem IPs tend to stick for many many months, so I decided to just use the NAT IP of the machine with Chunk which will load the repeater and the viewer.

I have compiled an InstantSupport and sent it to the friend; it was configured with the machine's NAT IP.

In the router, I have enabled port forwarding for that IP for the ports 5901, 443, and 5500.

When I run the repeater, its logs say:

Repeater for Rel1.0.8 of PcHelpware
socket() initialized
bind() succeded to port 5901
listen() succeded
socket() initialized
bind() succeded to port 443
listen() succeded

When I run/use the tool at http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ I show ports 5901 and 443 open to my WAN IP, but port 5500 shows closed (since I didn't configure for 5500)

The installation guide at http://www.chunkvnc.com/installationguide.html shows the repeater being configured for ports 5901 and 443, which is the way I did it, but the installation .pdf in 3.3.1 says the repeater should have been configured to be 5901 and 5500 (instead of 443).

But I think that 5500 vs 443 is minor compared to the rest of my problem.

In any case, when the helpee runs InstantSupport, I am not getting anything, no 6 digit number, registered in the logs.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm pretty sure I'm OK on the port forwarding at least for 5901 & 443. I also configured to forward 5500, but that part wasn't in the initial setup.

By NAT IP do you mean your WAN IP?

On your friends side does InstantSupport fail to start complaining that it couldn't establish a connection to the repeater?

If yougetsignal says that the ports are open and you close the repeater, check again and it says that they are closed then everything should be setup correctly on your end.

Software firewalls and virus scanners can cause things to stop as well, try another friends computer to be sure it isn't an issue with their setup.

Thanks for your reply. I re-compiled and made a new instantStupport (hereafter IS) and everything is OK.

My troubleshooting with the original IS was to run it from another machine on my LAN which worked. Then I used a telephone modem to get a machine with a different IP and the original IS didn't work there.

I decided that I had made some mistake in the original IS compile configuration so I did that again, using the WAN for the network to configure a second IS call it IS2. That IS2 worked satisfactorily on the tel modem machine so I sent it to the friend.

We successfully connected and I was able to straighten out his problems on two different machines, one an XP ethernetted to his router and the other his laptop XP wireless to his router.

So apparently I misconfigured something on my first IS.

Thanks again for your input and for ChunkVNC.
