another question about install as a service

Post by tech232 »

I'm new to the forum. Hope this hasn't been answered but if it has, I can't find it.

When I right click the running InstantSupport.exe icon in the tray & choose 'install as a service', it closes and I get the following two errors in my Win7 event viewer. I have UAC set to off. As long as I don't try to install it as a service, there is no problem. It runs great but I need to be able install as a service to reboot & reconnect.

First event: A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (VNC server for win32)

Followed by 2nd event: The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application

I tried what another poster suggested, .ie using the previous connection number but that did not help. Connection still closed.

Thanks for any help.

Interesting problem...

Before we go too deep into the errors check the Windows services, does the uvnc_service get installed?

Do you get the Uninstall InstantSupport link on the desktop?

Is it Win7 64 or 32bit?

Have you tried it successfully on any other computers?

Have you modified the code in any way?

Working on Win7 64bit machine.
Turns out that the Windows Event Viewer messages were irrelevant.
Everything is working great now. The biggest problem I had was connecting from the Internet.
I have a Netopia DSL modem/Router. When forwarding the 443 port it would show up ok in the
router Pinholes configuration but still would not allow traffic. I Went to the Software
Hosting section, chose the correct computer (it shows all on the local network), then under
the Games & Services tab, selected Services; Selected HTTPS and added it. That opened 443.
Also had to forward 5901 but was able to do that from Pinholes.

I don't know why attempting to install as a service previously failed (other than I may have
already had uvnc running.) Anyway, it is working fine now.

I tested it locally and over the Internet. I was able to install 'as a service' reboot &
reconnect both locally and over the net.

I'm running from my local machine and run a web server on the same machine. I'm still hazy
about how to use the viewer from a different location but that is ok for now I'll just keep
reading the docs, board, .etc.

I've been using single click for a long time (probably a year or more) and having the
ability to reboot & reconnect to the remote computer is a real asset.

Good job!
