UltraVNC on Windows 8 64 bit

Post by RobboD »

Hi,

I could use some help please. I use UltraVNC as a complementary module in a "language laboratory" style application. It enables the teacher to see the students' screens while they are working. The teacher can also hear each student's oral work (but this part of the application is independent of UVNC).

Until now I have been using UltraVNC version 1.0.8.0 and everything has been fine. On my network I have many versions of Windows(XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8) which allow me to test my applications. I have just downloaded UltraVNC version 1.1.9.1 to test it with Windows 8 64 bits.

I have a problem with the XP computers. When I try to run vncviewer version 1.1.9.1 on an XP machine I get this error message: "vcnviewer is not a valid Win32 application"; Is something missing like a dll for example? If I run vcnviewer.exe version 1.1.9.1 on a Vista or Win 7 machine everything goes as planned.

I would be grateful for any enlightenment.

P.S. I have also posted this on the French Forum if you would prefer to reply in French.

There are different exe for xp and win8.
Latest compiler doesn't support XP, so we compiled it with different compilers.

Normal, the installer install the correct version of the exe.
You can't copy a win8 viewer to a xp PC, bins are not the same.

You have a x86 and x64 installer. Unless your XP is x64 you need to use the x86 installer.

PS:
You can also download the bin zip files, the name contain the supported OS's.

Sorry. I've found it in zip UVNC_1_1_9_xp-win7_x86.zip

NEW PROBLEM:

The 1.1.9.1 vncviewer.exe will run on my XP machines but on one XP machine it fails to connect to the Windows 8 machine if I use the name of the computer. If I use the ipnumber, it works. What would cause this? The one that works with the name is XP Pro and the one that doesn't is XP Home Edition, if that makes any difference.

Some more questions:
1) Can I continue to use MSRC4Plugin.dsm with the new version or is there a new version of this? I notice the message "old plugin, encryption" when I use the encryption key.
2) Would the 1_1_9_xp-win7_x86 vcnviewer.exe work on Windows XP 64 bit if it's in the program files (x86) folder?

I have tested the 32 bit vcnviewer.exe on Windows 8 64 bit and there is no problem but I don't have a Windows XP 64 bit.

Thank you.

hostname resolve
Vnc use the OS name resolver, getipfromhostname().
Try "ping remote hostname" on the xp home ( in a cmd window), he should be able to convert it in an ip address.
VNC use the same method.
I don't know why it works on pro and not on home , perhaps compare your dns settings.

1) You can use it, but it's an older plugin with less config options.
It's save when you use a key file, it's less secure with a key exchange and the vnc passwd as key part.

2) All win32 exe works on any x64 system, you can put the exe at any place ( /tmp,/Home etc...)
If you install a program, the proper way is to install it it program files (x86), it more a convention
of doing it that way, but the exe run from all places.
( Any=supported by the compiler)

If you use the w2k 32bit viewer it run on ALL systems.
It's juts a little slower, but compatible with all OS's.

Mystery solved! The XP home computer had a wrong ipnumber in the windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file. There didn't need to be ANY ipnumbers in the hosts file anyway! I have taken them all out and everything is now functioning normally.
