mirror driver not installing by default on Windows 7 64-bit

Post by ajschorr »

Hi,

I just installed the new 1.1.9.6 release using the INNO SETUP ultravnc 1196 x64 setup link. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
I selected all the default options for the installation, but afterwards, the properties dialogue tells me that the mirror driver is not installed.
The download page says that the full installer should automatically install the mirror drivers. Am I confused about that? Do I need to try
installing the mirror driver manually from the zip file?

Thanks,
Andy

Thank you! I don't think that used to be the case. It might be helpful to update the download page to clarify this.

Hi,

I installed the addon package. But when I click on "Check the Mirror Driver", it pops up an error message that says:

Driver found.
Driver version OK
Driver Not Activated, is the viewer current connected?
Is winvnc started with run as admin, no permission to start mirror drive?

I am starting VNC as a service (I checked that box when I installed it). Shouldn't that automatically start it with admin privileges?
Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? This used to work without a hitch in older versions.

Thanks,
Andy

A mirror driver auto activate when a viewer connect and deactiavte when ir disconnect.

The popup tell that it is proper installed, but not active
Possible cause
1) It could be that no viewer is current connected -> not active, this is normal as the mirror driver should not be active in this case.
or
2) If winvnc.exe was manual started ( by clicking on it) you need the runas admin permission

If you are running as service, you always have this permission.
It's easy to see, when you click on the vnc systray icon, if service is installed and running
you only have the option to stop it, the other are grayed.

Are you testing with an active connection ?

Hi,

I tested just now from inside a VNC client session. It continues to give the same error message.
If you run the "UltraVNC/Edit Settings" program and click on "Check Mirror Driver", it pops up a window
whose title is "Driver found: version ok", but the text inside the window says
"1.00.22 driver Current Not Active (viewer not connected ?)".

If I go to the tray and select "Properties" and click "Check Mirror Driver" there, it pops up a window
with title "1.00.22" and the box says:

Driver found.
Driver version OK.
Driver Not Activated, is the viewer current connected?
Is winvnc started with run as admin, no permission to start mirror driver?

As I said previously, winvnc is starting automatically as a service. So I don't think any of these problems apply.

Thanks for your help,
andy

Hi,

Just to be clear: in the system tray menu, the options to "Install Service" and "Start Service" are greyed out. Everything
else is black (Uninstall Service, Stop Service, etc.).

Thanks,
Andy

Then you are running as service.
Activate server logging, perhaps the logging show more info.

Normal you just install the driver
select in the server properties to use the mirror driver
and connect the viewer.
There are not settings or other things that can be done.

What's the total size of the monitors, the mirror driver has a memory limitation
usual it's limited to (2x 1920x1200), max size depend on the OS.

Hi,

The system has 4 1600x1200 displays attached. Is that the problem? Is there any way to increase the memory
limit? I will look at activating server logging.

Thanks,

Hi,

To enable server logging, should I simply increase the DebugLevel from the default 0 value? If so, how big a number do I need to capture the need info? I guess maybe I should look at the source. Do I need to change DebugMode as well?

We are also having some problems with unexplained disconnections between the server and vncviewer running on Linux (tigervnc). I am guessing this is the right way to debug that problem as well. Please let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Thanks,
Andy

I guess the OS just doesn't have enough kernel memory for the big mirror display.
Kernel memory is some special part of the memory with limited resources, but a mirror driver require
a single shunk of memory.
You could temp enable 2 to test.

Just enable the debuglog, the levels are ok for debug.

Unexplains disconnect.
UltraVNC viewer sometimes reconnect in background. If the server switch session ( logon desktop to default desktop, switching user)
the server is restarted in the new active session. Using Ultravnc, the viewer is able to reconnect, but other viewers require
a manual reconnect.

Make sure that your Color is not set to 24 bit. The mirror driver used to produce a warning that it will only run in 256, 8bit, 16bit, or 32bit.

Also check the driver WHILE connected through the client.

Just posting what fixed it for me.
