just installed vers 105 on two pcs, home and office. it works just fantastic. i would just like to say thankyou. i though i was going to have trouble, but after doing some careful reading about forwarding ports and stuff, plus passwords and it works.

Home is running xp professional service pack 3. office an early copy of xp home with service pack 1 only. it had no support for remote destop . apparently this was the norm. both machines are behind routers and firewalls, but after forwarding the ports according to portforward.com it wasn't an issue. I am amazed at how fast the screen loads

I'm extremely tech challenged. I'm travelling to another state in a couple of weeks and I want to take my laptop with me. I want to get a remote viewing type program but the lingo drives me mad. I have looked at cloud but I'm not sure. Someone suggested this forum for me to get a better understanding. The trouble is, most explanations start with the assumption that the person already knows the basics. I also have to consider costs. Am I right to learn more about Ultra VNC?

No, probably not Kirsten. As a non-techie I think your best bets for remote control are:

1. LogMeIn Free (completely free for personal use; works great) http://logmein.com Be sure to select ONLY the LogMeInFree installations and NOT any "free trial". The trials expire, but LogMeIn Free does not!

2. TeamViewer (also free for personal use)

3. GoToMyPC (requires paid subscription)

The reason these are easier for you is that they are well developed and, more importantly, the companies involved maintain remote servers that both your laptop and your target computer connect to -- your laptop and the computer you're controlling just need regular Internet access, without any of the "port forwarding" and related concerns we typically deal with.

I second especially the recommendation of TeamViewer.

LoL Congratulation.

I've never tried LogmeIn, But I use TeamViewer and it works fine for all assistance and also making private tutorials... ( So I think Tmv Is Number One :D)

For noncommercial use, certainly. If you have seen there commercial pricing structure, I think you may change your opinion ;)
