Client hangs on "negotiate protocol version" - Need help.

Should you have problems with the DSM plugin, here's the place to look for help or report issues.

Client hangs on "negotiate protocol version" - Nee

Postby Dork » 2006-07-27 07:00

First off, I have read all threads on this forum, and MANY other forums relating to this. None provide a solution.

What is happening, is, when I first got VNC it was fine, and I used MSRC4Plugin_NoReg.dsm plugin... Now most of the time that I try to access the server using UltraVNC with MSRC4Plugin_NoReg.dsm it hangs at "Negotiate Protocol Version" and never gets past there. I had that problem for hours, then after those hours I tried again, and it worked... Then five minutes later it didn't work for over 24 hours, then it did for a few hours, and now it doesn't again. Does NOT make sense. Everything (server, viewer, plugin) is the LATEST version.

When I need access to my server, chances are I need it -NOW- --- not later when, if it ever does within the next five hours, decides to work again.

This is very frustrating, and nowhere on the internet (that I can find on google) does it say how to fix this.

The link you gave me does not relate to the problem at hand, and I can't use anything BUT MSRC4Plugin_NoReg.dsm plugin, so no "shortcuts" available, have to fix the real problem. Thanks though, any other suggestions?

I've seen too many variations of this thread, and ZERO solutions; is there a reason this is seemingly unsolvable?

I'm honestly shocked that by now no one can say "that's a known problem, here is how you solve it:"

Client Statistics (the computer I access it from):
Windows XP Professional
UltraVNC version 1.0.2
MSRC4 DSM Plugin version 1.2.1

Foxconn P4M800P7MA Motherboard
Celeron 2.66ghz 64bit LGA775 CPU
SATA 80GB HDD
Radeon 9600 Pro 256 MB Video Card
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC

-----------------------------------

The problem is that the server, that this computer is used to access, can not be accessed physically. Which means no changing plugins, no changing software, just fixing the problem without taking "shortcuts". :(

So I really could use some help here. I have not been able to access the server for 48 hours now!

Also, under "Options" is there a reason I can not change the coding to anything BUT "hextile"?

Screenshots:
STARTUP SCREEN: http://img141.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... agewu4.jpg (I have tried ALL the "Quick Options" without difference)
OPTIONS SCREEN: http://img154.imageshack.us/my.php?image=optionseb4.jpg (As stated, if I change from Hextile, and select something else, even "Auto Select Best Settings" it will automatically revert back to Hextile)
When I try to login... http://img373.imageshack.us/my.php?image=loginip0.jpg (And hangs there... Forever and ever)

Is there another viewer that might work? Ofcourse it would need to be able to use the plugin...

Even more news! I shutdown the viewer, put in the old IDE hard drive I used to use, started up UltraVNC and it WORKED:- So I put the much newer SATA hard drive back in, started up UltraVNC and it did NOT work.

I have exactly the same problem, only that changing the running directory, hard disk, floppy, CD, even another PC doesn't solve the problem. In most cases, it will heal by itself after one hours or so.

One more to add, a check by netstat invariably show that a connection had in fact been established between the two computers.

I found using the older version of the dsm no_reg with my rc4 key solved the problem. If you look at the vnc server while this is happening it shows a cleint active, and will not accept a second clent until the failed connection times out, or the client is manually removed from the connect list at the server end.

Hi,

I have the same problem and I looked for MSRC4 DSM Plugin version 1.1.8, but I cannot find it.
On the other hand, if I turn off firewall (Symantec Client Firewall) on the server, authentication succeeds.
Its really weird because ports 5900 TCP is open for all on the firewall.
But it seems to connect when firewall is on, only the negotiation doesn't work.
Please help.
Thanks

bevtech, thanks for the idea, but it doesn't seem like it is the problem.

What I have is not norton but Symantec Antivirus. Its not quite the same.
But anyway I've changed the port to 4800 and it still stucks on negotiate.

What is interesting is that if I have the firewall (Symantec Client firewall) disabled, I can connect and then I can reenable the firewall while in, I don't get disconnected.

Do you have an idea why? :|

Your firewall symantec port 4800 has to be open. It it not letting traffic pass through it. Need to open it so UVNC will work

Well, I've already done that before posting. I opened local port TCP 4800 for
connections coming from outside, for a specified computer (mine).

I guess I should look at (and maybe post) some log files, because otherwise it'll be hard to find out whats wrong. Is it the DSM plugin log, or the UVNC log that will give us more help here?

And it still hangs on negotiate...

Does the connection work without the plugin?

You need to be using 1.1.8 OR 1.2.2, and it needs to be the same version on BOTH sides. You should NOT be running 1.2.1. It is NG.

1.2.2 is here: http://msrc4plugin.home.comcast.net/msrc4plugin.html

1.1.8 is here: http://msrc4plugin.home.comcast.net/oldstuff.html

Are you currently running 1.1.8 on the server? You need to run 1.1.8 on the viewer and you need to have the correct key file.

You might want to generate some logs and post them. Logs from the viewer/server and from the plugins on both ends.

I used 1.2.1 on both, but since it didn't work I've changed to ARC4 and that gives the same result.

OK I'll try to post the logs.

Thanks

Hi,
It seems that it was a software firewall related issue. I uninstalled Symantec Client Firewall and installed ZoneAlarm instead and since it works fine with the ARC4 plugin.

Thanks for all.

Hi, Dork
I had the exact same problem last night. Everytime I used the viewer to connect my another computer, it just froze and pop up the little window.(same as the pic you took) I tried to connect the VNC sever again and again. I almost gave up and went online to find any solution. BUT!! no solution at all. I have been using UltraVNC for a long time and it was working great. It should had any firewall blocking problem since I did not change setting. The "hang on"problem came up right after I installed the Version 1.0.2 and updated the DSMplugins. So, I downloaded Version 1.0.2 and reinstalled without checking the DSMplugin, instead, I pasted plugins manually into the ultravnc folder. The problem was solved.

Just reinstall it. Hope you solve the problem

And I also found that if the sever-side DSMplugin type is changed, I have to restart the ultravnc server although "apply" and "OK" have been clicked.(it might only happen to me)

I'm having the same problem with version 1.0.2. Whenever I launch the viewer, it tells me that no plugin is loaded (even though it's there), and when I click "configure", I get this message:

The plugin cannot be loaded. Please check its integrity.

Anyone else get this message, and how do I solve this problem?

It was stored in a "Plugin" sub-directory within the UltraVNC directory.

I went ahead and followed the advice outlined above. I uninstalled UltraVNC completely, and reinstalled with without the DSM plugin. Then I downloaded the plugin separately using the link above, and put it right into the root directory. VOILA - now the viewer sees it! I also generated the rc4.key and copied that to the root directory. Now it's just a matter or repeating the same process on the server, which will have to wait a few hours, until I get home from work (I'd do it remotely, but I can't without UltraVNC - vicious circle). I'll let you know how it goes.

The following situtation repeat again and again:
Client reeze on Negotiate Protocol version ,
Server dead , refuse to connect ,
Client freeze ,
server dead ...

it keep repeating until once I reset the router . Then it allowed me to connect once . It works very stable even for hours , until you close the client . Once the client is closed , it cannot be connected again and freeze ...

anyone have any clue about it ?
