UltraVNC Linux Client

Post by elake »

I use a couple of different OS's in my network and I was wondering if you have plans to make a UltraVNC Linux client. I know that I can use TightVNC but I like the MS Logon that you have in this system and the other features also.

Thanks.

That is the web based piece right? I was thinking a vncviewer for port 5900 instead of the web piece.

host:
use winvnc1p.exe instead of winvnc.exe so you just need only open 1 port 5900 for http and rfb protocol

viewer
so java viewer

I guess what I mean is a client that does not go through the browser at all.

We don't have a linux version.

But on linux you can run also the java viewer as an application, outsite your web browser. In that case you also only need one port.

GCJ !!! Anybody already tried to compile the java code in native bins
(http://gcc.gnu.org/java/)

How do you run the viewer in linux

Linux VNC Viewer

Post by jps_manta »

I was also looking at this and found that there is a patch for the RealVNC linux viewer
for the MS Logon features of UltraVNC :

http://bofh.be/patches/vncviewer-mslogon.patch

Still need to check if it works...

It would be very cool to have a native UltraVNC client for linux though...

I wonder why the Java app isn't extended to be run standalone? I don't see any point in having to use a web browser? Just let me run the Jar on the client standalone?

vncviewer.exe worked mostly alright on wine-20050725 except...
  • titlebar menu doesn't hold those extentional items
  • hotkeys don't seem to work.

Viewer for Linux IS NEEDED!

Post by altsound »

The real advantage of UltraVNC over the others is: encryption (dsm)!
The viewer for Linux is needed because:
1- The viewer with encryption DSM does NOT currently run correctly on Wine: every few minutes on average (randomly) hangs up and I need to terminate it and reconnect. This at least happens with encryption turned on, and it does definitely NOT happen when the viewer runs on Windows. It also runs somewhat slower than on Windows. I tried wine 20050524, sorry not 20050725 but I somehow doubt that this problem got fixed in the meanwhile, as I don't see entries in wine's Bugzilla related to this.
2- The Java version does NOT support encryption!

Please do port the viewer to linux/posix.
Thank you

I also need UltraVNC viewer for linux supporting server with DSM encryption plugin.

If you have any linux/unix machine acting as a NAT, then you probably don't need encryption at all. Alll you need is to start ssh, with port forwarding. All communication is encrypted, and it also helps avoiding too restrictive firewalls.

vnc viewer for linux - not browser / not java

Post by lloydie »

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/vnc- ... m?download

l would really like a "true" ultravnc viewer as well as the additional options that ultravnc has over other clients is awesome chat/file transfer etc. However tightvnc do have a linux rpm viewer that works without an issue for myself. I am a complete newbie to linux running ubuntu and didn't have a problem in the world.

WORKS WITH WINE !

Post by altsound »

Forget my request of the viewer port to Linux. The viewer (with encryption) works wonderfully under linux with wine when executed *AS ROOT*!! As root does not hang up anymore like previously described, not even with encryption.
Set sudoers to allow a "sudo wine vncviewer.exe", for increased ease of use :-)

So nobody really answered the question: Does UVNC have plans at all to make a linux-native exact counterpart to the Windows UVNC veiwer?

The only way I would see that happening is if some linux developers port it over to linux. Being that almost all the current developers are mostly windows developers so unless some linux developers join the project and create it I do not see this request ever happening..

I have however used uvnc 1.02 in wine with the fedora core and it works with out encryption. To use encryption you need to use the open source plugins I have not tested that method but I have heard it works..

Aww, sadface.

Because a comparable linux client would be uber useful. Not having to install wine, or mess with stuff for the encryption would make UVNC the ultimate in cross-platform, plug-n-play-functional software.

Oh well. UVNC is truly a great, thoughtful, and complete program, and I'm grateful to have and use it. We really have no right being dissatisfied that no linux client exists.

Still we can dream. :P

Perhaps, some linux developers could be invited to join.

I just don't want to give up hope, cause Linux is so powerful. And thanx to Ubuntu, Linux can now be installed by just about anyone with and internet connection and CD burner. (use automatix2 after install) It's that easy to install. Now wonder it has been #1 linux distro downloaded since 2005
http://distrowatch.com/

BTW, the CD comes with an option to use as a Live disc. In case some want to try it out on the fly but not ready to install. Also if u do install it automatically detects ur windows OS's and lets u choose which to boot.

Love this project and just want it to reach the next level. As so many others may agree with me. This thread is moving in on 10,000 views, so the interest for Linux based is definitely there.

Currently we have no plan to develop a native Linux UltravNC viewer or Server (with all UltraVNC features).
We simply have not enought time or developers for it.

Furthermore, running it under Wine works quite fine. If any problem is encountered with the MSRC4 plugin under Wine, others plugin exist (the one based on OpenSSL for instance).

The JavaViewer is not as powerfull as the Win32 viewer but it features FileTransfer and is quite fast.

Ok, a native Viewer/Server would be cool, I agree... but we just have not enought resources for now.

Yes it will be great to have an a UltraVNC client for Linux because at this moment I'll start migrating to Linux, but our customers still using an a Windows based system, so for this reason I make an a UltraVNC Single Click client (2 versions - Operator and One Click) and of course it works fine for me. The main reason to migrate to Linux is that is FREE and for this reason I'll have the possibility to donate this great project.
The other important feature that I'll requested is an UltraVNC Single Click Logging - to have an ability to LOG an a START SESSION, END SESSION, USER, IP.

Or since today, there is SSVNC (or enhanced tight vnc viewer) which supports it. It now provides experimental support of ultravnc file transfert, chat window and some other features. These features are pretty new so don't expect them to work like the real uvnc (of course) but the code of this viewer can be improved at anytime if bugs are found.

I just tried Uvnc under Ubuntu distribution, it works fine with wine.
File transfer with SC works fine as well.

Anyhow, I'm grateful for your excellent program.
All the best.
