Icons...

Postby Rudi De Vos » 2004-10-04 17:30

Some people seems to find the eye to spyware looking.
Personal i don't know any spyware that put an eye in his icon
and people may know when the sysadmin is watching the PC.

But it could be that thoose people are right, and an icon is just an icon.

We want XP icons, that are a bit more related to the taskbar button style.

Feel free to send any icons you like.
+own work
+found on the net
In last case we need to know the owners email adress to ask permission (no copyright icons)

When we get more then 1, we organise a poll :)

keep the eye, please

Postby vorkoster » 2004-10-08 08:23

Hope to be not too off-topic here:

while planning to move from TighTNV to Ultr@VNC, I especially like the "eye icon" from TEST-19 because it clearly shows what's happening to the viewed users.

The standard icon from V1.00RC18 is nice, but doesn't make it _that_ clear.

Any way to have an option to pick an icon? The eye looks sharp, but would rather not have an eye staring at my users. The other thing is that it would be great to have the "connected" icon be very eye-catching. Like, red or something. . .or negative/reversed.

I like the new icons.

Postby joefu » 2004-10-08 13:45

Are you going to put something in the registry so you can customize what icons are used or do you have to recomple every time you want to change icons?

Well. . .just thought these looked reasonable. Even a small eye (only while connected) for those of you who like that.

The one with the blue/green eye is the more meaningful to me. I don't see any problem with spyware (as far as I know, a spyware tries to hide himself, not to claim it is running !).

The one at the top (too hard to explain) has a nice design, but is not meaningul enough IMO.

Vote will be at the end of the month....
Keep sending :)

Viewer and server can have different icons.

Multiple icons are possible (systray), but application icon
(what you see in explorer) can only be one.

I couldn't design anything graphically but I do prefer icons that tell me what the program is without hovering over it.
So how about a simple icon that looks like the letters UVNC?
When someone connects to your screen it can change to
"UVNC
Serving"
or something like that.

Another opinions.

1.An "EYE" icon is very often seen in PC environment, such as ACDSEE, Pica View , PSD (print screen deluxe) and other softwares. Need we follow this trend to get an EYE icon, and try to confuse our user and get a bad image?

EYEs are everywhere, but which one is UVNC's EYE?

2.I would not like have an eye staring at my users. Not a good feeling when remote controlling.

3.Old icon seems simple , tech-style and easy-understanding. It is recommanded that no need to change the outside looking for user behaviors.

4.A great look splash I think that will get a more impression on users.

i guess this was a little early to write out though...
i and some contributors have been working mainly on new style look & feel as in the "custom build" in below.
thanks for my testers. i'm pretty confident it'll attract people who love better interface looks, like you ;->

to the viewer we tweaked over the icon, logo, fullscreen titlebar and the connection option dialog.

now available on HTTP also.
binary (560KB) and source (177KB) <- includes image files

My 2 cents worth on new 'eye' icons

Postby sieve » 2004-11-25 02:29

For what it's worth, I'm really uncomfortable with eye icon - old icon was much nicer. This one will gives users the creeps - as if someone is spying on them ...

External icon support

Postby Terriff » 2005-02-01 19:26

How about supporting external icon files or libraries? That way, end users can change the icon to whatever they see fit for their specific environmental requirements or personal preferences.

Daemon Tools (and the awxDTools plugin) supports external icons and I love the fact that I can have whatever I choose show up in the systray.

I'm glad that the defaults are changing to a more professional look, though. :)

Why not use the "remote" graphic that is used on the installer and the documentation page?

Icons exist of 9 images (xp standard)
16x16 32x32 48x48 (16,256, 16777216 colors)
Finding and making an icon that look good in all
cases (9.x, w2k,XP) is not that easy..and a lot of work.

The current icons were done by the same group that made the
viewer buttons bar, same style.

If someone wants to create new buttons and icons, i will add to code to
load them dynamic...deal.

So, Rudi, you want someone to recreate all the icons. . .not just the tray icon? Or you just want an icon created in all the different resoltions needed?

Inactive icon is also application icon --> 9 formats needed
Connected icon is also used as viewer application icon -> 9 formats needed

So, we need 2 icons
+connect
+Inactive
that follow the xp style icons

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/defau ... picons.asp

If someone make the effort for making good looking new icons, i will make them load them dynamic....
