Ready to Run Project with US repeater.

Postby supercoe » 2010-03-11 00:03

I'd like to plug a website I came across while Googling "ChunkVNC":

http://www.nwitechsupport.com/

They have packaged ChunkVNC in 2 parts, OpenRemoteDesk and OpenRemoteView.
The best part about it is their repeater is based in the US so performance for me was great compared to the RTR Swiss and German versions.

I've messaged them to see if we can utilize their repeater in the RTR project.

Well, you know, supercoe, if you want to get really ambitious about it, you could encourage development of a network of such repeaters, much as Skype did (though they did it without exactly letting the users know what was going on).

I don't suppose I'd mind running a public repeater, so long as it had self-contained bandwidth limiting controls, much as BitTorrent clients typically do.

Since you're already bundling viewer/repeater/server, this would be an obvious fit for your project.

You could even make some sort of dynamic DNS registry available to hand out x.chunkvncrepeater.org addresses, and the ChunkVNC package could automatically query in random, roundrobin, or near-geolocation fashion for available repeaters.

With encryption at the viewer and server ends, this would still be safe, and it could be a beautiful thing.

Or have I gone mad? :)

Don't worry B you're not insane, I dream of a world like this as well!
The future is bright for this project for sure. :D

Thanks for the plug supercoe :D , it's much appreciated. I moved the repeater, by the way, to Chicago for better bandwidth.
I think B hit the nail head-on, the large-scale potential is definitely there. Yet it's so simple and elegant. ...Excellent work.
